BATON ROUGE -- A Louisiana police officer shot and killed a man following a confrontation outside a Baton Rouge convenience store, authorities said.

An autopsy shows Alton Sterling, 37, of Baton Rouge, died Tuesday of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and back, said East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Dr. William Clark.

Officers responded to the store about 12:35 a.m. Tuesday after an anonymous caller indicated a man selling music CDs and wearing a red shirt threatened him with a gun, said Cpl. L'Jean McKneely.

Video shows fatal confrontation between man, Baton Rouge officer

A 48-second cellphone video captured by a bystander — which circulated at a protest about the shooting later in the day — shows an officer firing at least one round into a man’s chest outside what appears to be the Triple S store, followed by the sound of at least four more shots as the camera veers away.

Warning: This video contains graphic footage of the shooting.

How convenient that the officer's body cams both "became loose" and were dangling from their chests at the time of the killing.

“His hand was nowhere (near) his pocket,” Muflahi said, adding that Sterling wasn’t holding a weapon. After the shooting, an officer reached into Sterling’s pocket and retrieved a handgun, Muflahi said. Sterling appeared to die quickly, Muflahi said. Just after the killing, the officer who fired the bullets cursed, and both officers seemed like they were “freaking out,” Muflahi said. The store owner said he heard one of the officers say, “Just leave him.”

Do they even bother instructing regarding deescalation of incidents any more? Is it truly shoot, hopefully to kill, so no questions can be asked later? Thank goodness for bystanders with cell phones, I guess. And that cuts both ways....it seems the truth is elusive no matter which element with whom we are dealing after a police "incident".

LE recvd report of armed man; Store owner saw gun from Sterling's pocket

"The owner of the store where the shooting happened said he saw officers pull a gun from Sterling's pocket after the shooting. Police have not confirmed whether or not Sterling was in possession of a gun.
According to early police reports, officers were called to the Triple S Food Mart off North Foster after getting a report of an armed man. Investigators said there was an altercation between police and that suspect, Sterling, in the parking lot....
Abdul Muflahi, who owns the store and knew Sterling, said he saw the shooting happen. According to Muflahi, one officer tased Sterling and a second officer then tackled him. He said that when the first officer then fired sh

I think we need to see the whole video before there is a rush to judgement. It is hard to watch, and it was tough seeing the officer pull his gun while in such close contact. HOWEVER, it doesn't appear AS is being very cooperative. When will people learn? When will they start doing what an officer asks? ( I am NOT saying that alone justifies the shooting)

when the video starts they are already about to tase him, so going by normal police procedure it is likely that they have been dealing with him for some time already and he is not cooperating, they dont normally walk up to someone and immediately tase them.

the first taser shot either misses or has little effect, they then yell "get on the ground" twice, then fire another taser. he is still not cooperating and still standing.

one cop takes him down and the other immediately tries to help restrain him, he is still struggling and not cooperating.

the assisting cop seems to secure his left arm but we cant see his right arm, the cop that took him down says "going for his pocket, gun he's got a gun"

they then both draw and i believe after the one cop says "dont even move" the other yells "he's going for the gun"

    then shots.

nobody here can say with any certainty whether or not sterling did try to get his gun out, but the cop certainly is claiming that.

sterling was clearly resisting and not cooperating for the entire time of the video.

"we dont execute people for sexual assault or possessing a firearm illegally"

well, that isnt what happened here so im not sure how it applies to this situation.

this man was clearly shot because he had a gun and he was struggling with the police who then claim he attempted to get to his gun during the struggle.

regarding whether or not his past record matters - it only matters to the extent the officers involved were aware of it, and whether it gave them any reason to expect him to fight, be armed, be more dangerous, be more likely to resist/flee

' ...was confronted by police after an anonymous caller said he had threatened someone with a gun outside the store ... '

We don't know if such a call was ever made - historically incorrect info always hits the media first following an officer involved shooting - info that is usually retracted, but by that time it is far to late as everyone believes it.
