'A couple tormented, neglected and abused their children by locking them in cages, tying them up and sexually assaulting them, an Adelaide court has heard.

Jurors were told the young boy and girl faced frequent beatings from their biological father and stepmother, both aged in their early 40s.

The Adelaide District Court heard the children's fingers were slammed in doors and they were tied to trees or locked outdoors as punishment.

The father also raped his daughter, the jury heard.

The man faces six counts of false imprisonment, five of aggravated assault causing harm, two of aggravated indecent assault and two of unlawful sexual intercourse and the woman is charged with two counts of false imprisonment and two of aggravated assault causing harm.

Neither can be named to protect the identity of the children.'

'Allegations a couple subjected their children to horrific abuse, including tying them to trees and locking them in cages, are just "fanciful stories" from children who did not want to live with their father, a defence lawyer has told a South Australian jury.'

He was acquitted of one count of aggravated assault causing harm.

The jury found the stepmother guilty of one count of false imprisonment but she was acquitted of two counts of aggravated assault causing harm and a further count of false imprisonment.'

Shocking child abuse at remote SA property; judge says leniency unlikely
ABC News
By court reporter Rebecca Opie
Fri Nov 25 15:31:07 EST 2016

'A woman involved in the shocking abuse of her husband's young children has described the period as the best time in her life, but a lawyer says the comment was made sarcastically.'

'During sentencing submissions, the woman's lawyer Sally Burgess pointed to a remark contained in a home detention assessment report, in which the woman described the period of the offending as the best time in her life.

"That was said or meant in a sarcastic manner — it's obviously not the appropriate way to address such questions," Ms Burgess told Judge Sophie David.

"[The woman] seems to deal with stress and difficulties in perhaps an unusual way, and that is by making a joke or trying to laugh things off."

Judge David questioned whether the woman accepted the court's verdict.

"Given her not guilty pleas, given her comments in the home detention report and given my brief reading of the psychological report, there has been absolutely no insight into this offending," the judge said.

"There is very limited scope for any leniency and I can't have any confidence in any prospects of rehabilitation or suggestion of remorse, particularly in light of what she has said to the author of the home detention report, sarcastic or not."'

'The woman remains on bail, while the man is in custody and both are due to return to court for sentencing next month.

Their names cannot be revealed for legal reasons.'

SA father given lengthy sentence over the imprisonment, abuse of two children

'A man convicted of the shocking torture, physical and sexual abuse of his children has been sentenced to 25 years' jail with a non-parole period of 19 years.'

'The father was found guilty of six counts of false imprisonment, four counts of aggravated assault causing harm, two counts of aggravated indecent assault and two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse.

The man and his wife, who cannot be identified, were today sentenced in the Adelaide District Court.

The 43-year-old man wiped tears from his eyes as he was sentenced after being found guilty of multiple charges relating to physical and sexual abuse.

His wife, the stepmother of the two children, was sentenced to three years' jail for one count of false imprisonment.

The woman, 43, who will be eligible for parole in two years, appeared to collapse as she was taken into custody.
Horrifying offending against children in presence of wife

During sentencing, Judge Sophie David said the man had "tormented and terrorised each child".

"The offending against [his two biological children] occurred when they were very young children and was characterised by not only sexual violence but by physical beatings and physical restraint," Judge David said.

"It is hard to articulate fully the sadistic and horrifying aspects of your offending.

They were your biological children, you were entrusted with their care and instead of protecting and nurturing them you violated that trust in the most profound manner."

The court heard that an audio recording played to the jury was allegedly of the father physically abusing his son in the presence of his wife.

Judge David said during the recording the woman could be heard laughing.

"That audio was nothing short of chilling," she said.

"The fact that you had knowledge of and was present for some of the charged and uncharged physical slog and you did not intervene, and on one occasion you laughed is relevant to when I turn to consider your thought and insight into your offending and your prospects of rehabilitation."

The court heard the woman had more recently expressed remorse for her actions but Judge David said she had to put it into the context of her not guilty plea.

The man, who maintains his innocence, was criticised by Judge David for his lack of remorse and contrition.

"You did not spare any of your children from having to give evidence at any of those trials," she said.

"Each victim impact statement details the understandably devastating impact of your conduct on these children, it is ongoing and you wreaked incalculable damage on their lives."'

The stepmom is just as guilty as the father. Neither should be set free again.
