I think he may match Michael Lee Pickering http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/4939dmca.html https://www.findthemissing.org/en/cases/26804/0/

He's missing from Victorville, CA since April 16, 1971. (Which fits in with the remains being skeletal.) The decedent had a wooden nickle from the Victorville Lunch House in his pocket. Amboy is about 1 hour 40 minutes from Victorville. Michael was going to hitchhike to San Francisco, so that distance would not be difficult.
20 years old fits in with the age range.
5'6" - 5'8" Michael was 6ft. so that's above this height estimate, but we've seen them be wrong before.

There are a few other UID's that I found in the correct time frame closer to San Francisco that might match Michael (and his red hair.) but that nickle from Victorville caught my attention.

What do you guys think?

He's mentioned in this news page:

"San Bernardino County authorities were attempting to identify the skeletal remains of an apparent murder victim found just off old U.S. 66 near Amboy in the Mojave Desert. Investigators suspected foul play because the remains may have been buried. They said the skeleton appeared to have been there for several months, if not years. The remains were found by a Fontana family driving in the area."
