The residence has been taped off and surrounded by several CHP and Fortuna Police officers who are waiting on a search warrant to enter the residence, Abshire said. A CHP helicopter is also circling the residence.

The damage of the vehicle found in the backyard matches the debris found at the scene of the collision, Abshire said.

The vehicle allegedly involved in a fatal hit and run in Fortuna on Tuesday has been recovered by authorities. CHP says they have a suspect but are not releasing the name at this time.

The CHP immediately started working on a search warrant; five hours later obtained one and entered the residence where no one was inside. CHP did have keys to the front door and says earlier in the day the resident gave them permission to enter, but they did not want to do so without a warrant. The vehicle was eventually towed to a secured location in Arcata.

“So we can take it out and continue the investigation; who the driver was, who the owner is, and evidence that may be on or in the jeep that might lead us to the driver that was responsible for this,” said Abshire.

What the......?! Horrific!

Am I reading it correctly they believe one victim's mother owned the Jeep. oh boy. :(

The suspected vehicle was found hidden in the back yard of a home owned by the mother of one of the victims. There has been no official press release outright saying it is the mother's vehicle or that she is a suspect, yet.

If it turns out to be her, suicide watch for sure. I would never be able to live with myself after doing something so heinous.

CHP Press Release posted today by Kym Kemp:

With the help from our local community and the tireless efforts of investigators the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Humboldt Area has recovered the grey 2015 Jeep Wrangler that was involved in this traffic collision. Through the investigation it was discovered that the vehicle was located at one of the victim’s residence. A search warrant was obtained for the property to seize any and all evidence that may be related to this collision. We have identified a suspect but we will not be releasing the identity at this time.

Any new information will be released as soon as possible.

Eureka Attorney Ben Okin, reached by phone this morning, said he is representing the suspect in the case and that, through him, she made contact with police yesterday. "We made contact with law enforcement," Okin said. "They didn't know who she was. We made contact with them. ... As far as I know, at the time we made contact on the driver's behalf, law enforcement didn't have any information on the identity of the driver. That (call) is what led to them being able to serve the search warrant. It wasn't something they discovered, as far as I know."

Drunk? Drugs? Shock?
Did she at least call 911 before covering the jeep with a tarp?

Is there a father?

Were the girls on the wrong side or middle of the road?

I'm shocked by this. How could she drive away? How far to get to the house?

Did she call an attorney before 911 ? Did she even dial 911 ?

The suspect vehicle was located less than a mile away.

By 2:45 Wednesday afternoon, the vehicle was located just a mile away in the backyard of a residence on Becker Lane. But the vehicle was not in plain sight, it was behind a wood fence blocked by two trucks. CHP says they looked through the fence and saw the vehicle.

The girls were hit at approximately 9:15 pm on Tuesday.

No indication that the suspect called 911 on the night the girls were hit.

Two young female teenagers were skateboarding northbound in the southbound lane of Eel River Drive, s/of Kenmar Road.

Was it intentional?

I doubt it.

Most likely an avoidable accident.

Failure to inform law enforcement on the night it happened and what looks to be an effort to hide the vehicle suggests some criminal culpability to me beyond hit-and-run. MOO.

Maybe they haven't made an arrest yet because someone could be trying to take responsibility for someone else.
