A New Hampshire man representing himself in his murder trial cross-examined his daughter about the night he killed her mother.

Stephen Mann is charged with first-degree murder, accused of shooting his wife, Kelly, and beating her with a hatchet in their bedroom last year while the couple's three children were in the house. Mann, 33, argues he acted under the influence of drugs and depression.

I'm hoping they find a way to tack on some extra years or some other punishment for putting his poor daughter through the burden of having to face him in court.

One of the last people to see Kelly Mann alive talked about the last few hours of the Nashua woman's life in court on Tuesday.

Her husband, Stephen Mann, 32, is charged with first-degree murder in her death. Elizabeth Krahenbuhl said that she was Kelly Mann's best friend and spent the night of her killing out with her barhopping.

Krahenbuhl said that the two stayed out late talking about Kelly Mann's crumbling marriage. Krahenbuhl asked Kelly Mann to stay overnight at her place.

On July 18, 2004, [the girls] were at home in Nashua when their father, Stephen Mann, murdered their mother. Mann shot and bludgeoned Kelly Mann early that morning before fleeing to Canada and leaving the girls, ages 12, 8, and 1 at the time, alone to find their mother and call 911.

"It feels surreal," Ashley said. "It doesn't seem like it's been five years."

Today, Mann is serving a life sentence for first-degree murder at the State Prison in Concord.
