Roanoke County police have released few details in the death of 71-year-old Susan Owen, citing the ongoing investigation. The former Virginia Western Community College professor, who taught nursing for almost 30 years, was found Sept. 8 in a wooded area of her yard in the 6000 block of Saddleridge Circle. She was partially clothed, and had trauma to her head and body. She died 10 days later from her injuries...

Mason said investigators have filed 37 search warrants in the case in Roanoke County, Roanoke and Salem. Those warrants, some of which were unsealed in early June, detail investigators' efforts to gather information about events surrounding the attack. Detectives have sought records on Owen's financial, social media, phone and online activity. Several warrants asked for similar records from potential suspects.

According to several of the unsealed search warrants, Owen might have been injured three days before police found her. A search warrant filed Sept. 28 in Roanoke County notes that police suspect Owen was injured Sept. 5.

Newly unsealed search warrants... indicate that a family member, a neighbor and one of Owen's former foster children have all been investigated. Police would not say if any of them are suspects...

A family member's car has also been seized.

According to the first link, it's been determined the former foster child is deceased, and is not a possible suspect.

With no witnesses and very little physical evidence, police have filed more than three dozen search warrants over the past two years as they continue to investigate. The warrants list evidence taken in the investigation, including cellphone records, social media evidence, a computer and a car...

"Through out investigative process, we have resubmitted some of our DNA items for the new DNA testing that's out there now," he says. "This is not a cold case. We're still investigating it. It is very important to us."

While no new search warrants have been filed in at least six months, police say they are continuing to schedule interviews as they work to get more information on the case.
