A registered sex offender has been arrested on suspicion of murder, rape and sodomy in connection with the death of a young Willits woman, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported late Tuesday.

Terrell James Marshall Jr., 44, of Vacaville, was arrested Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of killing Kayla Grace Chesser, 25. Chesser’s body was discovered by friends early on the morning after Halloween at their Poppy Street home, where she was a guest. She had been socializing with a group of people but they dropped her off and continued to socialize elsewhere, sheriff’s officials said.

When her friends returned home, they found Marshall, the homeowner’s cousin, in the house and later found Chesser unresponsive in one of the bedrooms.

Terrell James Marshall Jr., 44, from Vacaville was arrested at an out of county hospital for the Nov. 1 rape and murder of Kayla Grace Chesser, 25, of Willits.

Marshall was being transferred to the Mendocino County Jail where he is expected to be held without bail, according to Mendocino County sheriff's Capt. Greg Van Patten. Marshall is a registered sex offender, with a prior conviction for sexual penetration by force or fear...

At around , 12:30 p.m. Nov. 1, the California Highway Patrol responded to a high speed crash of a pickup truck on Highway 162. The truck was reportedly traveling at 100 mph when it left the highway, plunged down a cliff and into the Eel River near milemarker 12. Marshall was driving the pickup and suffered serious injuries. He was airlifted to an out-of-county hospital for treatment, where he remained until his arrest.

Terrell James Marshall Jr.,44, from Vacabille, entered a plea of "not guilty" when he appeared in Mendocino County Superior Court on Dec. 11, according to the Mendocino County District Attorney's Office. Marshall is suspected of killing Kayla Grace Chesser, 25, of Willits, on Halloween night at a Brooktrails residence.

DA spokesman Mike Geniella said earlier this month that Marshall was facing charges of murder with the special circumstances of murder committed during a rape.

Geniella has also said Marshall could face the death penalty, but that decision hasn't yet been announced by District Attorney David Eyster.

He is conveniently close to Vacaville, where the imprisonment he requires is provided. Or if he joins Scott Peterson at San Quentin, not too far away.

On 10 June 2016, Terrell James Marshall entered a no contest plea to raping and murdering Kayla Grace Chesser. The no contest plea is equivalent to conviction in California. This plea included Marshall's waiver of appeal rights, consideration of a prior felony strike for a sexual offense, and no credit for jail time served while under arrest. A sentence of 50 years to life was due to be pronounced on the 46-year-old Marshall on 6 July.

Wow, I never saw this originally. How horrible. She was a gorgeous woman who had a lot going for her. I can't imagine her family's pain. Sad case.

Hello all,

The %^&* who murdered Kayla Chesser has just pled guilty to her rape and murder. He is sentenced to 50 years to life, he will receive no credit for jail time served awaiting trial, and best of all, he gave up his appeal rights. Despite my liberal views on administering justice, I admire that last provision. This is a definite case of lock him up and toss the key. Local DA C. David Eyster and his staff deserve a round of applause for this one.

I would urge other WSers to contact your local DA with the suggestion they do likewise in plea bargains, especially in California. Even if the surrender of appeal rights is not legal in your state, you will let the DA know you feel murderous sociopaths need to be forever kept from harming the public.
 
I'd be curious whether TM spent time in Willits during the time when others, such as Erik Lamberg, disappeared. Could he be responsible for more deaths than is known?
 
Marshall was one of those obsessively jealous macho types who believed any woman he was involved with was his personal property. That's why he murdered Karla. "If I can't have her, no one else can." (Pardon me while I gag my breakfast back down).

What reason would Marshall have for murdering a lost man in the woods? Bisexual lust?

I didn't realize Erik was lost in the woods. I thought he was last seen in Laytonville and his vehicle was found on Sherwood Road.
 
The map I put in Erik's thread clearly shows him as having abandoned his car on a back road between Willits and Fort Bragg.

Erik Lamberg is one of a cluster of three disappearances of men out along Sherwood Road. They vanished near, or on the route to, the old Sherwood Valley Rancheria.
 
I am familiar with the sheriff's webpage, although not with this changed format. I have written up every cold case homicide and disappeared person on his website. The Mitchells are written up at https://www.websleuths.com/forums/s...chell-34-Ukiah-31-Oct-2004&highlight=Mitchell

Incidentally, both Mitchells were murdered in their family home on the Pinoleville Rancheria just north of Ukiah. Noland was sleeping inside when he was shot. His father was beaten to death outside their home.

I never found a Willits connection to their case. All indications were the murders were tied in with the federal probe of that era into tribal corruption on the Coyote Valley Reservation.
 
Burblestein, thank you for the great effort you go to for these missing persons and unsolved homicides up in Norcal. I have seen started many, many threads. I will read up on the Mitchells thread, thank you for sharing that.
