Australia: Children stripped, assaulted and tear-gassed at detention center

    'Child torture'

The ABC program showed footage of a teenage boy hooded and strapped to a chair half-naked, in what was described as "Guantanamo Bay" style treatment, according to CNN affiliate.

Dylan Voller, now 17, had a spit hood placed over his head and his ankles, wrists and neck shackled after he threatened to hurt himself.

And the Indigenous Affairs Minister saying this never 'piqued his interest'. Then what does?

How and why this government got returned I do not know. I am ashamed to be Australian and have been for a few years now. We are not the country we used to be but are instead governed by fear and hate.

From what I can tell, Canada and New Zealand are both doing okay. Just about every other country has gone to the dogs it seems.

Northern Territory youth detention centres in shocking admissions at the Royal Commission.

Mr Voller’s treatment at Darwin’s Don Dale Youth Detention Centre sparked the Northern Territory child detention royal commission after footage of him shackled to a chair in a spit hood and a group of detainees being tear-gassed appeared on ABC’sFour Corners.
Mr Voller, 19, this afternoon told the commission that conditions in detention, which he first entered aged 11, were often miserable. He said detainees were regularly denied access to food, water and toilets as punishment for bad behaviour.

Former Don Dale detainee Dylan Voller is applying to be released from prison because of his mistreatment in detention.
Voller is known for the footage of him spit-hooded and shackled to a restraint chair in detention in a Four Corners expose, which sparked a royal commission.
The now 19-year-old told the commission this week that he was denied food and water by guards and had to defecate into a pillowcase while in detention.

The royal commission into youth detention in the Northern Territory has confirmed it is considering a trip to New Zealand to look at alternative approaches to youth justice that appear to be achieving results.
A spokeswoman for the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children said the New Zealand system was recording "impressive results" in reducing recidivism rates among young people.

So that the terms of reference can be met, the northern territory detention royal commission will be extended by 4mths.

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-12-1...months/8127868

The Commonwealth and NT Government have agreed to extend the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory by four months.
The extension will be accommodated within the existing budget.
The new reporting date will be August 1 next year, and the commission will release an interim report on March 31.
"Given the importance of the royal commission's work, both [the Northern Territory and federal] governments consider that it is reasonable and appropriate to grant the short extension," a joint statement from NT Chief Minister Michael Gunner and Federal Attorney-General George Brandis said.
"No further extensions will be granted."In September one of the commissioners in charge of the royal commission, Mick Gooda, said it was not possible to meet the existing reporting deadline and an extension was needed.

Hundreds of former juvenile detainees could be compensated for allegedly suffering physical and psychological abuse inside Darwin's notorious youth detention centres, after lawyers filed a class action against the Northern Territory Government.

The class action, thought to be a first for the Northern Territory, was filed by the legal firm Maurice Blackburn and detailed allegations of "unlawful" mistreatment against former juvenile detainees Dylan Jenkings and Aaron Hyde, including false imprisonment, assault and battery.
If successful, the legal move would not only see Jenkings and Hyde compensated, but also set a precedent for others who have suffered inside NT youth corrections to be compensated.
"Our clients are concerned not only of their own treatment, but the treatment of other young people in youth detention centres," lawyer Ben Slade said.
"These young people are entitled to be compensated for the wrong that was done to them.
    "Things have to change."
The class action is just the latest legal proceeding to emerge since the ABC's Four Corners program showed footage detailing children being stripped naked, tear-gassed and physically abused inside NT youth detention facilities.

Don Dale female detainees given morning-after pill following alleged sex during riot

Three girls at Darwin's Don Dale Youth Detention Centre were given the morning-after contraceptive pill after allegedly having sex in a pool with teenage boys following a riot in 2011, a royal commission has been told.
One of the boys, who was 17 at the time, was referred to police after it was suspected he had sex with a girl aged under 16, although it is unclear if he was ever charged.

Don Dale guard filmed detainees urinating

    Updated: 6:05 pm, Monday, 20 March 2017

A former guard at the Don Dale Detention Centre has told a Royal Commission hearing he filmed children urinating and eating bird faeces and posted the footage on social media.

Conan Zamolo worked as a guard at the Don Dale Detention Centre until he was sacked in 2014.

During the Royal Commission hearings in Darwin, he was asked about incidents where he used his mobile phone to film detainees.
