ALICE - The Texas Rangers now have been called in to investigate a fatal fire in Alice. Authorities said the fire is part of a robbery and brutal murder that left a 73-year-old man dead. A chilling crime and the first murder in Alice in nearly two years.

Brown was murdered for a bag of coins, less than $40 in change. Police said an acquaintance to Brown, 23-year-old Marie Gallegos Monday night, confessed to stabbing Brown, stealing his car, and going back to burn down his home on the corner of Lantana and Gibson (map).

Two teenage girls were also arrested for their involvement. Investigators said Brown and Gallegos knew each other for about two years, but for some reason she turned on him.

Jimmy Brown was well known in Alice. To Bernie Castillo he was like a father. "Somebody like Poppa Brown a 73-year-old man he wouldn't hurt nobody” he said. “He'd take his shirt off his back for you."

"Oh my goodness, that is terrible, that is terrible," said neighbor Billy Boyd.

Gallegos and a teenage girl are charged with capital murder. Another teen was also arrested for fleeing from a Jim Wells deputy in Brown's car Monday night in a dangerous hi-speed pursuit.

This poor man deserved better than this .I cant believe they murdered him for $40.00.:banghead:

That is so sad. I hope the females get exactly what they deserve. Why in the world would they do something like that to an old man who was a decent sort? Just another story that shows the way the world is going these days. :furious:

Marie Gallegos was sentenced to 74 years in prison Friday, after she was found guilty of the October 2005 murder of Jimmy Brown.

After a week-long trial, a Jim Wells County jury deliberated for less than 30 minutes before returning a guilty verdict in the case...

Gallegos... said she and Brown were friends and had a standing arrangement that he would give her money, occasionally in return for sexual favors. Gallegos testified that the night Brown was killed, she had asked him for money but declined specific sexual requests he made of her, which led to an argument and physical confrontation that ended with Gallegos stabbing Brown in the neck.
