Michael was a transient living in and around Fort Bragg CA in the early 2000s. When he failed to make his Christmas call home in 2003, a relative reported him missing to the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office. Investigation by MCSO revealed that the last known use of Michael's debit card was at the local MacDonald's on 8 August 2003. However, that was a dead end; they didn't find Michael.

At about 9:15 AM on 16 July 2009, MCSO was called to the slope behind Caito Fisheries, 19400 South Harbor Drive, Noyo Harbor, Fort Bragg. A work crew clearing heavy brush had found skeletal remains. A wallet near the body contained Michael's photo ID. A comparison with dental records confirmed that Michael Ray Larsen had been found.

The site where he had been found was at the bottom of a steep drop adjoining the MacDonald's parking lot, which was atop the slope stretching up from the fishery. The Mendocino County pathologist who examined Michael found no signs of foul play. Adding to the picture was the fact that Michael was found just below an encampment used by the homeless. With no suspicions of foul play, this would seem to be a closed case.
