Details of Disappearance
Carla last seen in Clearwater, Washington on July 1, 1981. That night, she left her family's home to babysit an infant at a house ten miles away. When the baby's mother returned home that evening, Carla was gone and the baby was home alone. A broken, blood-spattered Galliano liquor bottle was on the floor. Carla has never been heard from again. The blood at the house matched her type, but DNA testing was not available in 1981 and so the stains were not definitively linked to her.

Authorities have a suspect in the case, a transient logger named Ken Barry. Bloodstains and broken glass from a Galliano bottle were found in his pickup truck. Barry died suddenly of a heart attack in 1986 or 1987. He was never charged in Carla's case. Her disappearance remains unsolved.

Do you remember Carla Owens? Girl disappeared 35 years ago from West End

It may be a long shot, but that's often the only hope when investigating a "cold case" of a person's disappearance.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Cold Case Squad, with support from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, has produced an artist's age-progression image of a 14-year-old girl who went missing 35 years ago this summer in Jefferson County's West End.

Foul play is suspected. No trace of the girl, Carla Owens, has been found.

"It would, frankly, just be a miracle if we ever found her," said Bob Gebo, who supervisors the cold case squad. "Our thought is not that she is living and has a life somewhere else. Our hope is that somebody who maybe didn't get talked to by police back then, or heard or saw or never has spoken up about it, might see this poster and come forward."

Wondering out loud.

The digs mentioned in this article took place in 2007.

10 years later, and with the advancements in DNA testing technology, could LE revisit their evidence?

Blood found on glass at the home young Carla disappeared from?
Blood found on glass in the pickup truck?

Did LE ever try utilizing trained dogs in the area they were digging in?

So sad. One more child that needs to be returned home. IMHO

Carla, ca. 1991

Details of Disappearance
Carla last seen in Clearwater, Washington on July 1, 1981. She lived with her parents and two siblings in Kalaloch, Washington. That night, she left her family's home to babysit an infant at a house ten miles away. The baby-sitting job was expected to extend into the Independence Day weekend.

Carla left home with the woman whose child she was supposed to watch, and they were driven in a pickup truck by Kenneth Barry, a transient logger. When the baby's mother returned home that evening, Carla was gone and the baby was asleep on the couch, evidently uncared-for for some time.

There were large bloodstains on the living room floor and pieces of a broken, blood-spattered Galliano bottle, but there wasn't enough blood to indicate a serious or fatal injury had occurred there.

Carla has never been heard from again. When police searched Barry's pickup truck, bloodstains and broken glass from a Galliano bottle were found.

Barry died suddenly of a heart attack in 1986 or 1987. He was never charged in Carla's case, but is considered a suspect.

Although the blood found at the scene of Carla's apparent abduction and the blood in Barry's truck were Carla's blood type, DNA testing that would have proved the blood was hers did not exist in 1981. In the decades since Carla's disappearance, police have lost the blood samples her parents provided. Her disappearance remains unsolved and foul play is suspected.

What a sad case.

Bumping for Carla. Cases like this absolutely infuriate me. Just a teenage girl going to babysit, trying to help someone out and maybe make a few bucks, something millions of teenage girls before her and since do all the time. And some disgusting creep decides to take the opportunity to assault and murder her, then hides her body so it cannot be found? I hope that heart attack the POI suffered was as terrifying and painful experience as possible. I also hope that fate and circumstance will align some day soon and her body will be found so she can be given a proper burial.
