Both victims were dressed in Muslim garb when targeted by the shooter, who fled the scene on foot and remained at large. Members of the mosque quickly denounced the double homicide as a hate crime.”

“Imam Alala Uddin Akongi, the married father of three, was a revered religious leader since his arrival in Queens from Bangladesh less than two years ago. His assistant, 65-year-old Thara Uddin, died about four hours after the attack.”

    Info about Ozone Park demographics:

"At the turn of the 21st century immigrants from Latin America, South Asia (Bangladesh), the West Indies, and South America (Indo-Guyanese & Indo-Surinamese) moved in, adding a diverse atmosphere to the neighborhood, which is especially apparent along 101st Avenue and Liberty Avenue near the neighborhood's border with Richmond Hill.[10] The neighborhood remains largely Italian-American; however, these new arrivals have made Ozone Park become one of the fastest-growing and most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in New York City. Aside from these larger groups, there is a large Hispanic population in Ozone Park, mainly concentrated in the northern portion of the neighborhood near the Woodhaven border, and an African-American minority, spread throughout the neighborhood."

Imam and His Assistant Killed in Shooting Near Mosque in Queens
    The New York Times
By ASHLEY SOUTHALL and ELI ROSENBERG
    AUG. 13, 2016

    http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/13/ny...eens.html?_r=0

“Henry Sautner, a deputy inspector in the New York Police Department, said the police had not determined a motive for the shooting. “There’s nothing in the preliminary investigation that would indicate that they were targeted by their faith,” he said.

Still, the shooting shook the Bangladeshi residents who live in the neighborhood and attend that mosque and others there, on the border of Brooklyn and Queens.”

“Hundreds of Ozone Park residents rallied Saturday evening at the crime scene, chanting, “We want justice!” over the sounds of the subway overhead and helicopters in the air.

Eric A. Ulrich, a City Council member who represents the area, said that the video footage would be key to identifying the shooter. “We are going to need your help identifying him,” he told the crowd.

Many there said that the nature of the shooting, in the middle of the day with no obvious motive, led them to believe the men were targeted.”

Imam And Friend Gunned Down After Prayer In New York City
Police said the lone gunman shot both men in the head.

“Linda Sarsour, the executive director of the Arab American Association of New York, told The Huffington Post the Muslim community is in shock.

“I’m scared,” Sarsour said. “When you hear these kind of things happening in your community, with the climate we live in, that’s the first thing that comes to mind: You’re afraid. It happened to the leader of the mosque, while he was in his religious garb.”

    *

“Sarsour said the killer’s motivation doesn’t matter ― the fear is still there.

“Even if it turns out it’s not a hate crime, these people are still living on edge,” she said. “When you’re from a poor, immigrant community and English is not your first language, I can see how their fear is exacerbated. People are in shock.””

I always wondered why somebody doesn't do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody.

Officials say gunman shot both men in the back of the head without saying a word.
    "without saying a word"

    A. one man lived long enough to tell authorities of this.
    B. a witness was close enough to verify nothing was said.
C The perp is in custody & has revealed this fact to police.
D The Daily News embellished to sensationalize the story.

I'm putting my money on "D"
I understood every word you said. It was the order that you said them that has me confused.

SKETCH RELEASED OF GUNMAN IN SHOOTING OF IMAM AND ANOTHER MAN IN QUEENS
    ABC7 NY
    Mallory Hoff Reporter

    http://abc7ny.com/news/sketch-releas...ueens/1469264/

OZONE PARK, Queens (WABC) -- “Police have released a sketch of the person they're trying to find in the fatal shooting of an Imam and another man near a mosque in Queens Saturday.”

    *

“The suspect was described by witnesses as a man with a medium complexion, last seen wearing a dark shirt and blue shorts. Police released a sketch early Sunday of a dark-haired, bearded man wearing glasses.”

    *

“"There's nothing in the preliminary investigation to indicate that they were targeted because of their faith," said Deputy Inspector Henry Sautner of the New York Police Department.

Both men were wearing traditional religious attire and Akonjee was carrying about $1,000 in cash but the money was not taken.”

    *

“Police say there was no argument before the shooting - the man just approached and fired. The investigation is currently ongoing.”

Police seek more video recordings in probe of imam’s slaying
    Newsday
    Updated August 14, 2016 11:29 AM
    By Anthony M. DeStefano

    http://www.newsday.com/news/new-york...ing-1.12174953

“Police on Sunday were seeking additional video recordings in the area where an Ozone Park, Queens, imam and an assistant were gunned down two blocks from their mosque.”

    *

“NYPD officials have said they had not determined a motive in the afternoon shootings.

“When you get a head shot, head shots are always indicative of trying to kill somebody . . . it sounds like an execution,” a high-ranking NYPD official said.

“Some people in the community say this is a hate crime, hey it very well could be and we will always keep that option open,” the official continued. “But we can’t call it a hate crime right now without knowing it. If we say this is definitely a hate crime and a guy is caught next week [for robbery] and we try to tie him into that, the defense would jump all over that and say, ‘Oh, you’re charging him with those shootings, too? I thought those were a hate crime.’ You have to watch how you commit to anything.””

This is probably unrelated, but doesn't this missing man from Long Island (gone missing just after midnight Sunday) look like the sketch of the suspect?
