Lawyer: Former Mississippi officer indicted in 2015 shooting

A lawyer says a former Mississippi police officer has been indicted in the October 2015 shooting death of a black man.

Attorney Jim Waide said Thursday that a prosecutor told him Canyon Boykin, a white former police officer in Columbus, has been indicted for manslaughter in the death of Ricky Ball. Boykin hasn't yet been served, but Waide says he's scheduled to appear in court Friday in Columbus.

A local prosecutor transferred the case to Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood in July, saying it would prevent appearance of bias.

Former Columbus Police officer indicted in Ricky Ball shooting

A special Lowndes County grand jury has indicted former Columbus police officer Canyon Boykin in the shooting death of Ricky Ball.

WTVA has learned the indictment was handed down by the grand jury after hearing evidence presented by the Mississippi Attorney General's Office.

Ball was shot October 16th after fleeing from a car during a traffic stop.

He and Boykin struggled and Boykin claimed Ball pulled a gun while running away.

The case has stirred controversy in some elements of the community.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spent eight months looking into the shooting.

The findings were turned over to District Attorney Scott Colom, who asked the Attorney General's office to take over the case. The case will be prosecuted by the State Attorney General's Office.

Tupelo Attorney Jim Waide tells WTVA he was notified this morning of an indictment for manslaughter. Waide is one of the attorneys for Boykin.

A spokesperson for the City of Columbus stated the following.

"Due to ongoing litigiation, the City of Columbus will not comment."
