A heartless mom abandoned her 5-month-old son in a Bronx shelter, leaving the infant alone for more than three days, officials said Saturday.

The baby was found Friday under a dingy bed with a telephone cord around his neck, police sources said.

Police said Spaights, 41, left the shelter on Summit Ave. in the Bronx’s Highbridge section on Monday. When shelter workers realized she hadn’t signed into the building for three days, they went into the room on Friday. They found Spaights’ infant son all alone under a bed, officials said.

A telephone cord was wrapped around the child’s neck but investigators aren’t sure if the mom placed it there or if he became entangled after she left, sources said.

The severely malnourished tot was taken to Lincoln Hospital, where he was recovering Saturday.

Anyone with information about Spaights’ whereabouts is asked to call CrimeStoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

Why would they not check her room for 3 days? Every shelter I'm familiar with space is at a premium and the homeless have to check out and check in again daily. I'm glad they found the baby but that is just weird they didn't notice her room was empty sooner.
Also this from the above article:
She has been arrested 15 times since 2003, mostly for criminal trespass and drug possession. She was previously forced to give up another child after the city’s Administration of Children’s Services investigated her for abuse, according to police sources.

Shelter residents said Spaights moved in recently and was rarely seen with her baby.

“She'd come out often without it,” said one resident, who gave his name only as Larry. “I just want them to find her.”

I hope that baby goes to people who will love it. :(

Is it possible she went out and something happened to her? Not that leaving a five-month old alone even for a minute is okay.

Weird they didn't check her room sooner even in a big place someone should be keeping track.

Shelter may not be an accurate term for where she left little King. Maybe these are individual apartments owned by a private org or the city that are provided to families who qualify who would otherwise be homeless?

Shakeria Spaights, 41, allegedly left her 5-month-old son unattended in their apartment on Summit Avenue in the Highbridge section of the borough on Wednesday.

The building manager noticed Spaights had not signed in for several days and did a room check. The baby, named King, was found underneath his crib with a phone charger wrapped around his neck.
