Chief: North Carolina police officer dies after being shot

A North Carolina police officer who was shot and wounded as he attempted to serve warrants on a man died Monday, authorities said.

Shelby Police Chief Jeff Ledford said in a statement that Officer Tim Brackeen, 38 and who was a 12-year veteran of the force, died at a Charlotte hospital.

Ledford said Brackeen was looking for 23-year-old Irving Lucien Fenner Jr. early Saturday morning to serve warrants on him. According to the chief, Brackeen found Fenner at a home, where the two struggled before Brackeen was shot in the chest. The chief said Brackeen was wearing his bulletproof vest at the time of the shooting.

Fenner was initially charged with attempted murder, but Ledford said the charge has been upgraded to first-degree murder.

A Shelby police officer who was shot while looking for a wanted man over the weekend has died, the police chief said Monday.

Officer Tim Brackeen, 38, died Monday morning at Carolinas Medical Center.

Law enforcement is still searching for Irving Fenner Jr., 23, who is accused of shooting Brackeen.

Brackeen was shot at 12:20 a.m. Saturday while looking for Fenner, who was wanted on outstanding warrants, officials said. Other responding officers heard the gunshots and found Brackeen near Parkview Street.

The police chief told Channel 9 that he was shot in the torso.

Brackeen was taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center and then flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he late died.

Fenner was wanted on armed robbery and kidnapping charges. A new warrant has been issued against him for murder.

Gov. Pat McCrory's office on Monday announced that the state is offering a $10,000 reward for Fenner's arrest.

Shelby resident Bob Cabaniss came to the department hoping to add $100 out of his pocket to the reward.

"I can't do anything police-wise, but maybe I can do something monetarily and help,” he said.





Fenner's last known address is 2506 Blacksburg Road in Grover, North Carolina.

Fenner is facing a first-degree murder charge, officials said.

Brackeen had been with the Shelby Police Department since July 2004 and worked as a K-9 officer. He was named Officer of the Year in 2012. He was married and had a daughter.

"We had been praying for him,” resident Annie Harris said. "When I heard the news it hurt me so bad"

She didn't know Brackeen, but she believes that he was working to serve and protect her.

"He was just out here just trying to do his job," Harris said.

"We feel so sorry for this situation right now," said Dr. Guillermo Lesassier, the father of Brackeen's former partner. “We need more people like him.”

Shelby Mayor Stan Anthony presented Brackeen with the Officer of the Year award four years ago.

"Our community is just in a state of shock right now to lose someone that was such a devoted and loved employee of our city right now," Anthony said.

"It's a tragedy for Shelby and the nation. This has got out of hand," said Kristy Strickland, whose mother served ont he police force with Brackeem and who knew him well.

The State Bureau of Investigation is helping with the investigation.

"At this time, our department asks for everyone to keep Officer Brackeen, his family and the entire department in their thoughts and prayers," Shelby police said in a news release.

So sorry to hear about another senseless work related death. The loser who shot him should have got off his lazy behind and got a job, then he wouldn't have been out breaking the law and wouldn't have had an arrest warrant in the first place! Find the creep and lock him up for the next hundred years!

Man wanted in shooting death of North Carolina cop arrested in Rhode Island

Rhode Island State Police arrested a man Wednesday who was wanted in the shooting death of North Carolina police officer Tim Brackeen.

According to WSOC-TV, SWAT team members took 23-year-old Irving Lucien Fenner into custody at around 2:35 a.m. at an apartment in Coventry, Rhode Island. Police said Fenner was taken to a hospital to treat a gunshot wound he suffered in the deadly incident with Brackeen.


Officer Tim Brackeen died on Monday morning

Brackeen, a Shelby officer, was shot in the chest 12:20 a.m. on Saturday as he was searching for Fenner, who had failed to show up to an August court date for misdemeanor charges of carrying a concealed weapon and marijuana possession.

We see needless killings like this, and then people wonder why cops are so 'trigger happy' when they are doing a traffic stop in the middle of the night. They know that their own death can come instantly, out of the blue, and they are always on high alert.

Fallen Shelby officer Tim Brackeen honored at service, laid to rest &#8203;

Friday afternoon a Shelby police officer, killed in the line of duty, was honored by thousands of people who packed into a baseball stadium to remember him.

Officer Tim Brackeen was shot early Saturday morning while serving an arrest warrant in the area of Parkview Street. Brackeen died from those injuries Monday morning at Carolinas Medical Center, in Charlotte.

Crowds have packed memorials held Wednesday and Thursday nights to honor Brackeen at Bethel Baptist Church in Shelby.

Friday afternoon, an estimated 8,000 family, friends, officers and residents packed into Keeter Stadium, the baseball stadium located on the campus of Shelby High School.

Officer Brackeen's younger brother, Rev. Stephen Brackeen, officiated the funeral.

"Lord, I'm thankful for all these K-9 officers that stand behind me and I know that Timothy would love that the most," Rev. Stephen Brackeen said during the service.

Speakers included Brackeen's pastor, co-workers, the mayor of Shelby and Governor Pat McCrory.

"Our state mourns - not only for the family of the Brackeens - but for the entire city of Shelby," Governor Pat McCrory said. "Tim was the best of North Carolina and frankly the best of the United States of America."

Sources say Irving Fenner Jr, the man accused of shooting and killing Shelby Police Officer Tim Brackeen, is back in North Carolina to face his charges.

Fenner signed an extradition waiver Thursday as he sat behind bars in Rhode Island. Tuesday evening, sources told WBTV that Fenner, who is facing charges in Cleveland County, was being transferred to be held in the Gaston County Jail.

Law enforcement officials said Fenner will not be kept in the Cleveland County Jail because he is accused of killing an officer in that county. He will be kept in the Gaston County Jail for safety reasons and to prevent any future conflicts, according to officials.
