PA - Daija McCall, 17, fatally shot, Pittsburgh, 17 Sept 2016 *Arrest*

The death of Daija: A teenager’s murder in broad daylight

The streets of Homewood can be cruel. By all accounts, 17-year-old Daija McCall, an aspiring singer, managed to stay out of trouble and had no enemies anyone could point to. She kept to herself when she wasn’t at school working on her music and laying the groundwork for a career on stage.

She was doing what kids with kids with dreams are supposed to do.

That’s why what happened to Daija on Saturday afternoon on Upland Street hit her community hard. The teenager who sang with a soulful voice and wrote songs about social justice died under a hail of bullets.

Despite her best efforts to avoid neighborhood drama, she was the intended victim.

Perry North man sentenced to life in murder of 17-year-old Homewood girl | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
A Perry North man has been sentenced to a mandatory term of life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2016 murder of Daija McCall, 17, of Homewood.

Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Edward J. Borkowski on Monday handed down the sentence to Douglas Lockett Jr., 20, for second-degree murder in connection with the Sept. 17th, 2016 incident.

“It’s hard to have a birthday,” said Ms. McCall, who turned 40 on Monday.

“My 7-year-old still wants to know why his sister hasn’t come back,” said Ms. McCall. “For me to bury my child at 17 years old, that day... I took a breath. I still have yet to let it out.”

The trial for Steven Cansler is currently scheduled to begin on October 22nd.
