Police Search Home Of Rescued Boater; Mother Still Missing
missing3.jpg

A man who was rescued after spending a week at sea in a life raft was debriefed by the Coast Guard Tuesday in Boston after the search for his mother was called off.
Authorities also searched his home for clues.
Nathan and his mother disappeared September 18 after leaving Point Judith, Rhode Island on a fishing boat named the Chicken Pox.

There was no mayday call and no radio transmission of any kind from the fishing boat, according to the Coast Guard.
On Tuesday, the Coast Guard released audio of their conversation with Nathan after he was rescued by the freighter.

Thank you for starting a thread on this, los2188. When I read the news yesterday that a man had been rescued a week after a shipwreck and two days after the Coast Guard search was suspended, it seemed a miracle after all hope had been lost.

Then, I read an article that mentioned difficulties in his family previously--he ran away in 2011 as a 17-year-old after his horse died and his grandfather was murdered in 2013, my curiosity was piqued. A google search showed the homicide was unsolved. I found it in the Cold Cases section here: A few of us were posting there. http://www.websleuths.com/forums/sh...hn-Chakalos-87-Windsor-20-December-2013/page3

Turns out Nathan was a suspect in that death. The police submitted an arrest warrant to the prosecutor. It was return unsigned with a request for more information.

The size of the boat makes his explanation to the Coast Guard that he couldnt see his mother when the boat was taking on water seem odd.

Some new details on what Nathan said happened as the boat was taking on water--what Nathan and Linda were each doing when the boat went under. This article also discusses where each thought they were going on the fishing trip. Linda told friends that they were going off Block Island, about 10 miles out. Nathan told someone at the marina they were going 100 miles out on this overnight trip to a deep water area called Block Canyon. The CG debriefing was to figure out how Nathan's life raft was found in the 62,000 square area that had been searched extensively. That is an effort to improve future search and rescue operations, not a criminal investigation.

More details in this report from the Keene Sentinel. John Chakalos was a Keene, NH native and his home with the renowned Christmas display was in nearby Chesterfield, NH.

In the warrant used to search his home in Vermont, South Kingstown police said a friend of Linda Carman’s told police that she had refused to go fishing any farther than Block Island and that she believed their destination was Striper Rock near Block Island, according to the search warrant.
A woman whose boat was docked next to Carman’s told police that he told her he intended to go fishing at the “Canyons,” about 100 miles off shore, according to the warrant. Carman told the Coast Guard the boat sank at Block Canyon.
Another witness told police that Carman removed the trim tabs from his boat and patched the holes with a marine sealant, the warrant said. He also told police he did not see any fishing equipment. Trim tabs provide lift to help keep a boat on a straight plane.
A witness at Point Judith Marina told police there were “many issues” with Carman’s boat, including a newly installed motor and air getting into the fuel lines. The witness also said there was a problem with the boat’s bilge pump. He said he was unsure whether the pump or motor issues were resolved prior to the fishing trip.

Vermont man lost at sea was suspect in grandfather's killing
The case of a 22-year-old man rescued at sea after clinging to a raft for a week took a dark turn Wednesday as it was revealed he was a suspect in his grandfather's unsolved murder.

According to a search warrant for Carman's apartment obtained by the newspaper, Carman was the last person known to see his maternal grandfather, John Chakalos, alive on Dec. 20, 2013, when he had dinner with him at his home in Windsor.

Oh my - I followed John Chakalos's case a while ago. He seemed like such a generous man. I hope LE can finally solve his case. Too many strange happenings/losses in this family.

I do not have a good feeling about this, at all...

"That was one of their bonding things," Hartstein said. "When he was available, she tried to make time so she could spend time with him."

That's sad if there's a possibility NC harmed her. :(

A man rescued after spending a week at sea says he had nothing to do with his grandfather's 2013 unsolved slaying and didn't harm his missing mother.

Also from the above link :

Court paperwork released along with the search warrant shows that Alfred E. Bucco, a lieutenant with the South Kingstown Police Department in Rhode Island, believed "evidence relating to the crime of RIGL 46-22-9.3 {Operating so as to endanger, resulting in death} will be located inside Nathan's residence."

LE seems suspicious ! Imo.

I'd not heard of John Chakalos' case.
Need to catch up a bit.

"A source confirmed to WBZ-TV’s sister station WFSB in Hartford that Nathan Carman was once “a primary person of interest” in that murder. Windsor police Capt. Thomas LePore said Wednesday that the case is still open and that Carman remains a “person of interest.”

"In the course of investigating the killing, authorities said in court papers that they found Carman’s handwritten notes on making explosives, seized a shotgun and other weaponry from his Middletown, Connecticut, apartment, and learned from family members that he once held another child “hostage” with a knife."

"They also said Carman had had several alarming episodes while he was a high school student in Connecticut. Those episodes were not explained."

"Some of Carman’s family members told police that, concerned for their safety, they had hired armed private security to protect them in their homes from Nathan." Wow!

Nathan got rid of his hard drive and GPS after the murder of his grandfather. I'd read previously that when his Middletown apartment was searched by LE, the found other weapons but the gun was used to kill his grandfather. This report elaborates that they found a receipt for the caliber of gun that was used in the murder.

No, that's NOT suspicious at all !!! :fishy: :notgood:

Wonder if there was a life ins. on either grandfather or mother and NC sought to collect ?
:moo:

He had the same affect when interviewed. Scripted answers, no emotion. This morning on Good Morning America they said he managed to get rations, a sleeping bag, and other things onto the life boat to save himself. But he didn't even see what happened to his mother before the boat sank? Um, yeah.

The grandfather's estate was $42 million. He left his children $21 million. I don't know if the grandchildren inherited anything directly.

Nathan had been living in an apartment in Middletown, Conn. in 2013. He purchased the house in Vernon, Vermont after his grandfather's death.
