AKA: Laurie Widmer
Reported missing Sept 26th but last seen July 7th in the company of a man arrested for stealing money from her bank account.
He claims he put her on a bus in June.

A western Maryland man with a 1971 kidnapping conviction is charged with stealing $4,000 from the bank account of a woman missing since July.
Court documents say 67-year Jerry Petry of Hancock was charged Thursday with forgery, illegal firearm possession, obstructing an investigation and stealing from a vulnerable adult.

A Hancock man facing two cases stemming from the disappearance last summer of a Hancock woman has been offered his "temporary freedom" if he divulges where the woman is, a prosecutor said Thursday in Washington County Circuit Court.

Plea negotiations have been ongoing with Jerry Petry which could result in his "temporary freedom in exchange for Laurie Hendershot's whereabouts," Deputy State's Attorney Joseph Michael told Circuit Judge Mark K. Boyer at the end of one of two evidence-suppression hearings in the defendant's cases.

It is one of two cases that link Petry to last year's disappearance of 54-year-old Laurie Hendershot of High Germany Road. A search of her home turned up a pool of dried blood at the bottom of a flight of stairs, according to court records.

"We still want to know where Mrs. Hendershot is," Deputy State's Attorney Joseph Michael told the judge after she handed down her verdict.

Hendershot, who reportedly suffered from alcohol abuse and mental-health issues, was last seen with Petry on July 7, 2016, in Hancock, court records said.

It has been more than a year since Laurie Hendershot was last seen alive, but the mystery of her disappearance might soon be solved because of an agreement reached Monday in Washington County Circuit Court between the prosecution and Jerry Edwin Petry.
Petry was not in court Monday, but Deputy State's Attorney Joseph Michael outlined for Circuit Judge Viki M. Pauler an agreement in which Petry's prison sentence would be temporarily vacated if "he will show us the whereabouts of Laurie Hendershot."

"We believe she is deceased at this point," Michael said.

The agreement calls for Petry to be released from custody at Maryland Correctional Training Center and held in lieu of his original bond at the Washington County Detention Center.

From there, Petry is to lead investigators to Hendershot, he said.

Body found in search for missing woman: http://www.heraldmailmedia.com/news...cle_08c38f4c-6cdf-11e7-832b-0bdfacc52f4f.html

Human remains were found Wednesday at a site off National Pike west of Hancock, where authorities have been looking for a woman who went missing more than a year ago, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

It is too early to tell whether the remains are those of the missing woman, Laurie Hendershot, said Deputy 1st Class Carly Hose, a spokeswoman for the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Before a sentencing hearing this past June, prosecutors tried numerous times to get the 68- year-old to cooperate in connection with the Hendershot case.

He refused, until Tuesday, where he revealed a burial site to investigators.

Michael believes Petry's time behind bars, the start of a 15-year sentence, convinced him to change his mind.
"At his age and physical health, it's gonna be tantamount to a end of life decision," he says.
Michael says the overriding reason for the deal was to give Hendershot's family a sense of closure.
So does the discovery of the remains mean that Petry buried them?
"He had the means, he has a backhoe on the property," Michael says. "There was disturbed earth, she's clearly buried. He would have the means and the opportunity."

In September, Petry's 15-year firearms sentence is to be reimposed.

He'll also faces charges of forgery and obstructing an investigation.
Prosecutors say Petry is also to plead guilty to using Hendershot's money inappropriately, possibly after she passed away.
"For this person, its more or less he's looking at a life sentence and he's getting 90 days off on the front end," Michael explains.
Authorities still have to get toxicology reports and DNA samples to make a positive ID on the remains.
Michael says if evidence of a homicide are uncovered, he may--- or may not, prosecute the charge.

"A lot of answers we'll never have in this case," he says. "But the one we do have, is where this person, these remains came from. And if they turn out to be Laurie Hendershot, which is likely, we'll solve at least that mystery."

Scattering Hancock woman's ashes brings 'rough year' to an end

Finally, family and friends gathered Saturday to put her to rest by dispersing her ashes on her property on High Germany Road near Hancock.

"It was a long time coming, but I feel like we've got a little bit of closure," said Hendershot's brother, Mark Miller, as her ashes were scattered.

Miller described his sister as “a good, kind, unique, free-spirited individual” who “loved the natural beauty of Washington County, which she adopted as her home many years ago.”

Hendershot's body was found buried in a yard off National Pike more than 10 months after her pastor had reported her missing. Police later determined that Jerry Petry, whom she had befriended and the owner of the property where her body was found, had buried her but had not caused her death.
