Emergency room staff said the child had fresh and old scratches on her face that were too many to get a clear count, bucket handle fractures in three bones, bruising, other scratches on her torso and say she appeared to have other healing fractures. She had burns, too.

Mr. Levys trial began Tuesday before Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Joseph K. Williams III. The Wilkinsburg man is charged with homicide and with three counts each of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children for allegedly abusing his 20-month-old son, who had a severe, horseshoe-shaped burn on his thigh, as well as Ms. Alstons then-7-year-old daughter, who had a healing scratch on her face and bruises on her arm.
Mr. Levys has not been in the courtroom for his trial because he has refused to participate appropriately. He has said each time he is brought to the courtroom outside of the presence of the jury that the judge has no jurisdiction over him.
