Parolee charged in 'execution' of well-liked L.A. sheriff's sergeant

It had been two days since Young rushed to Antelope Valley Hospital to see the wounded lawman before he died. He held his hand until Owen's wife could arrive.

"I wanted to see the guy that killed my friend," he said in the hallway of the Lancaster courthouse.

Then Trenton Trevon Lovell appeared in court for the first time since his arrest.

Sheriff Jim McDonnell, who refused to speak the suspected gunman’s name at a news conference this week, called the slaying a “calculated execution.” He said the shooter wounded Owen, then stood over his body and pumped an additional four rounds into the lawman’s body.

My community is heart broken. RIP Godspeed Sgt Owen. :rose: Prayers to his family and many, many friends.

Authorities said Lovell was on active parole when he encountered Owen, 53, outside an apartment complex Wednesday afternoon with a stolen gun.

Sheriff Jim McDonnell, who refused to speak the suspected gunman’s name at a news conference this week, called the slaying a “calculated execution.” He said the shooter wounded Owen, then stood over his body and pumped an additional four rounds into the lawman’s body.

After the killing, authorities said, Lovell ran to the front of the apartment complex and tried to steal Owen’s cruiser. A second deputy confronted him and opened fire on the cruiser, but Lovell threw the car into reverse and rammed a second patrol car, which struck the deputy and injured him, authorities said. Lovell was shot and wounded in the shoulder, officials said.

Owen, a 29-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department and a Medal of Valor recipient, was a well-known sergeant who volunteered as a football coach in the community.

As Lancaster mourned his killing, even people who had been arrested by Owen visited the city’s sheriff’s station to pay their respects.

On Friday, Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris said he plans to ask the City Council to rename Lancaster Community Park after Owen. If approved, the space would be named “Sergeant Steve Owen Community Park.”

Owen had worked most of his law enforcement career in the Antelope Valley.

Young said he had been friends with Owen for about 15 years.

At the court hearing, Young said he noticed a man in a sheriff's uniform with flat-top haircut -- like Owen's -- walk into the courtroom.

For a fleeting moment, he thought it was Owen.

“You know it's not,” he said.

Owen, 53, was shot to death as he responded to a young mother’s 911 call reporting a burglary at her apartment building in the 3200 block of West Avenue J-7.

Sheriff Jim McDonnell alleged Thursday that Lovell — whose name the sheriff refused to utter — shot Owen behind a residence after being confronted by the sergeant, who radioed that he had the suspect at gunpoint before he was shot.

“Sergeant Owen approached the suspect in response to a burglary call,” McDonnell said. “The suspect immediately shot Sergeant Owen. He then stood over and executed Sergeant Owen by firing four additional rounds into his body. He then unsuccessfully searched the body for the sergeant’s weapon with the intent to use it to murder the first responding deputy.”

The first responding deputy fired numerous times at Lovell, who had pointed his weapon at him, striking the suspect once in the shoulder, the sheriff said.

Lovell allegedly jumped into the sergeant’s patrol vehicle while a second deputy arrived at the scene, then rammed the deputy’s vehicle with Owen’s patrol car.

“Not only did the suspect want to kill our deputies, he held two teenagers hostage in a neighboring house until they were rescued by the heroic efforts of our Special Enforcement Bureau and our Lancaster Station personnel,” McDonnell said.

The two teens were held at knifepoint, according to prosecutors.

Owens was a 29-year department veteran who had worked in the Antelope Valley for years and was known for his community involvement, especially with area youths. He was promoted to sergeant five years ago.

Owen received a Meritorious Conduct Medal in 2014, along with five of his Lancaster Station colleagues, for their roles in a pursuit and carjacking that ended with the capture of the armed suspect and the motorist’s rescue.

Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris announced Friday that he will ask the city council to rename Lancaster Community Park as Sergeant Steve Owen Community Park.

“He deserves to always be remembered by the residents of the city of Lancaster and the Antelope Valley,” the mayor said. “Renaming our community park after a true hero is one small step in that direction. Steve was killed in the line of duty protecting a community in which he was deeply embedded. Sergeant Steve Owen was one of the best-known deputies throughout the entire Antelope Valley region.”

Owen’s alleged killer has been arrested 11 times, first as a juvenile on suspicion of selling marijuana, and was jailed or imprisoned twice, according to the sheriff.

McDonnell said he believed the death penalty would be an appropriate sentence if Lovell is convicted of murdering Owen.

This perp is what I call a life time criminal! In and out of jail, or on probation since he was a juvenile. Why can our system not keep these people locked up?

History on these repeat criminals will show that as they get older, their crimes will escalate to more severe ones. Until our system gets tough by making prison a place that no one wants to go, and takes away these credits for all the good things they do, we can expect to see a continued failure in our prison system. IMO.

This very experienced officer, had the perp AT GUNPOINT---and was waiting for back up. So how did he end up dead ? :rose:

I listened to a local radio show about the incident. An officer called in, and wondered out loud, if Sergeant Owen might have HESITATED when he saw the suspect reach into his waistband.

We had THREE police involved shootings in a 2 day period in Southern California. I am sure that no one wanted to be the next officer involved in another incident.

IIt is hard to believe that such an experienced, decorated, well respected officer allowed a punk to get the drop on him like that. But if he didn't see a weapon, he might have hesitated before shooting because he did not want to be the next Darryl Wilson.

In 2014, Owen was part of a team of deputies from the Lancaster division who were awarded the medal of valor for saving a hostage who was being held in a car at gunpoint, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Police officials praised Owen in particular for figuring out a way to capture the suspect without injuring the hostage. Since the suspect was wearing a bulletproof vest, Owen decided to use his stun gun rather than fire his service weapon, the Times reported. He and another deputy shot their stun guns through the car’s open window, disabling the suspect and allowing the hostage to escape.

“We want to say thank you for the love and support you have shown our family as we mourn the loss of our husband, father, brother, uncle, son, and ultimately our HERO, Sgt. Steve Owen,” the statement, which was posted on Facebook, read.

“The continuous outpouring of encouragement, gratitude, and respect for him that has come from our community and across the nation has brought us the comfort and the strength needed to survive this tragedy. You all have truly touched our hearts.”

A quick-thinking teenager “befriended" a wounded gunman who burst into his home, cleaning him up and providing a change of clothes to keep him calm moments after authorities said he shot and killed a Los Angeles County sheriff's sergeant, the youth’s mother said Thursday.

The mother, who asked to be identified only as Sara for fear of unwanted publicity, said her son and daughter were in the house during the Wednesday afternoon ordeal and did their best to keep the gunman calm before they could alert her about what was happening and find a way to get him out of their Lancaster home.

Lovell entered their home through a side door, his shirt visibly bloody, their mother said.

Her son helped Lovell out of his blood-soaked shirt and gave him a change of clothes, she said.

But Lovell didn’t appear to be leaving.

So the woman said her 19-year-old daughter faked a panic attack. Her son told Lovell he needed to go upstairs to get his sister some medicine. Once he was away from Lovell, the teenager texted his mother, telling her the man was in their home.

In a panic, the woman said she drove “like a maniac” until she found deputies and told them their colleague’s killer was in her house.

“This guy killed a cop and he's thinking he doesn't care. He's done,” the teens’ mother said. “He killed a cop, why would he care about killing two kids?”

Deputies quickly moved to the house to search for Lovell, who had been there about an hour.

As deputies closed in, Lovell stepped out of the family's home and onto their back patio, she said. Her teenage son quickly slammed the door and locked it.

Oh MY Lord. Those teens were so lucky and so intelligent. And brave. Their Mama should be so proud. And relieved. :candle:
