"Three Palm Springs police officers have been shot Saturday, according a department news release.
They are hospitalized and their conditions were unknown.Gerardo Barrera was working nearby in the quiet residential zone when he heard gun shots.
"I saw a person on the ground,” he said. “Someone kept pumping her chest but she wasn't moving."

not looking good for 2 of the officers... very sad.

It seems they keep updating this article:

“Frances Serrano, who lives directly across the street from where the shooting took place, spoke to the father of the suspected shooter moments before the incident. The father told Serrano that his son, who has mental issues, had a gun and wanted to shoot cops.

“He came over and asked for help,” she said.

Serrano called the police and the father walked back toward his house. Soon after, Serrano heard gunshots. Later police knocked on Serrano's door.

At 2:45 p.m., Serrano said two officers were on her front patio kneeling on the ground with rifles pointed at the shooter's house.”

#PalmSprings recap 2: Cops are still in defense positions, rifles in hand. Armored car on scene. Seems like suspect is barricaded in house.

“Today Palm Springs lost two brave officers," Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes said at a news conference, his voice shaking with emotion. "I am awake in a nightmare right now."

The slain police were Lesley Zerebny and Jose Gilbert “Gil” Vega. Reyes said Vega was a 35-year veteran who was due to retire in December and had chosen to work overtime on Saturday. Zerebny is the mother of a 4-month-old baby, he said.

The officers were at the door of a house when the shooting began, Reyes said.

"It was a simple family disturbance and he elected to open fire," Reyes said.”

3 in 3 days here in the southland. Heartbreaking. All executed. Isn't it time we acknowledge that some people with mental illness can indeed be very dangerous to others?

This ^^ info really concerns me. Apparently the neighbor, who called 911, KNEW the mentally ill subject intended to shoot some cops.

Did the dispatcher know that and inform these officers? Hard to believe they knew that and still 3 were shot like that? Wouldn't they have sent SWAT instead?

Supposedly, the neighbor across the street made the 911 call. We don't know how the situation was described to 911 or how it was then described to the officers who went to the door.

I think this was a massive screw up by the dispatcher, if the 911 caller did tell them what she knew:

“Frances Serrano, who lives directly across the street from where the shooting took place, spoke to the father of the suspected shooter moments before the incident. The father told Serrano that his son, who has mental issues, had a gun and wanted to shoot cops.

Why would these officers be shot so quickly if they knew he wanted to shoot some cops? If the 911 caller did not share that vital info, it is a damm shame. If she did, then it is even worse, in my opinion, because then there was a major miscommunication.

Surely that msg was relayed. That would be the first thing I would have said and made certain the person I was talking to understood.
