The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the Boulder County Bomb Squad, the Boulder County Hazmat Team, Nederland Fire Protection District, the Boulder District Attorney’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are on scene.

A California man was arrested in Chicago over the weekend in connection to the bomb left at a Nederland shopping center that also houses the town's police headquarters.

A criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court of Colorado on Saturday charges David Michael Ansberry, 64, with manufacturing the explosive device, which was found outside the Nederland police station last week.

The complaint was filed Oct. 15 and unsealed Monday.

(...)

The federal criminal complaint says agents were able to get the phone number for the phone attached to the explosive, as well as the number of a phone that called the one attached to the bomb several times in an attempt to detonate it.

Authorities were able to trace the phones back to stores in Denver and Longmont, and through surveillance video were able to identify the person who bought them as a man who is 3-foot-6 inches tall and weighed about 100 pounds.

The man also had a pony tail, was wearing a baseball hat at the time and was on crutches.

'3 foot six with a pony tail and crutches' would stand out. Why place a bomb outside the Nederland Police Station? Are the police there very tall? Could he have been paid to do this, since no message seems apparent? Does he have bitcoins, I wonder?

Interesting, reminded me of this old guy with a cane, who recently called in a bomb threat from a Forrest Hills subway station, in Queens, NY.

Nederland bomb suspect's arrest stirs memories of troubled era
Man was allegedly associated with 'STP' hippies who frequented area

"No one has publicly stated what brought David Michael Ansberry to Nederland earlier this month, and why he allegedly placed a remote controlled bomb outside of the town marshal's office that failed to detonate.

A source close to the investigation, however, told the Daily Camera that the 64-year-old California man was associated with an obscure hippie group known as the STP Family, a member of which was shot and killed by the Nederland town marshal in 1971.

The handful of online articles and blogs that exist about the group paint it as a rowdy bunch who eschewed personal hygiene as a matter of course and loved to drink, take drugs and cause trouble wherever they went. They were also apparently more fond of firearms than the average hippie.

The name possibly stood for "Serenity, Tranquility, Peace," "Sagittarius, Taurus, Pisces," or was a nod to the amphetamine "STP," a street drug capable of sending its users into a nightmarish three-day-long marathon of intoxication.

Whatever their name stood for, they and many of their hippie brethren were not liked by some residents of Nederland.""

Weird, see post here in NOCO / I had actually referenced the hippy thing:

(Aren't hippies supposed to nonviolent? :peace: )

Forty-five years after former Nederland Marshal Renner Forbes killed Guy “Deputy Dawg” Gaughnor, who he considered a nuisance, and then dumped his body near a gold mine shaft, the victim’s friend is accused of seeking vengeance by trying to blow up the Nederland police station, sources familiar with the investigation say.

They say that on Oct. 11, David Ansberry, 64, left a backpack containing an improvised explosive device in a village shopping center where the small police station sits beneath a massage and acupuncture parlor.

A 64-year-old man who allegedly planted a bomb outside a Nederland police station to avenge the vigilante murder of a fellow member of a hippie gang pleaded not guilty Monday afternoon in U.S. Magistrate Court in Denver.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Nina Wang remanded David Michael Ansberry to jail without bond after prosecutor Gregory Holloway told her the suspect is a risk of flight.
