Gunman killed after wounding 11 Boston cops, two critically

Eleven Boston police officers were injured — two critically — by a gunman wearing body armor and wielding an "assault" rifle who was shot and killed after opening fire on police, according to Police Commissioner William Evans.

The commissioner says two officers — one a 28-year veteran and the other a 12-year veteran of Boston Police — were hospitalized in “extremely critical condition.”

Wow, I wonder if it's standard for 11 officers to show up to a domestic violence call, or if there was something else going on?

Most of them probably showed up as backup after shots were fired.

I think its time for cities to relook at their policies regarding who can become process servers. This guy seemed to have his own little police force!

From the Heavy article:

“The Boston Globe reported that City Council minutes show Figueroa “was approved to be a constable by the council in April 13 following a background investigation by Boston police” and was approved “on a voice vote as a constable,” allowing him to “serve legal papers connected to civil litigation.”

In 2006, Boston.com reported that constables “carry badges and have arrest powers” and that nearly half had previously been arrested themselves. The city currently has 150 constables.”

Maureen Feeney, the city clerk, said a Kirk P. Figueroa was sworn in July 22 for a three-year term as a constable in Boston. Figueroa's term was slated to expire on April 30, 2019.

The commissioner identified the suspect as Kirk Figueroa, 33. A Ford Crown Victoria with the name of a website, Elite Policing.org, was towed from the scene by police Thursday. The Globe has confirmed Figueroa is the person whose biography and photograph are posted on that website.

Wearing a red beret in a photo of himself, Figueroa identified himself as a constable in the city of Boston.

Evans described a "hectic scene" as officers rushed to pull injured colleagues to safety while under fire.

“Some of them were involved in the exchange of gunfire, some involved in applying their hands to the wounds of these officers,” Evans told reporters.

Army Says East Boston Police Shooting Suspect Lied About Military Experience

Army spokesman Tatjana Christian said Figueroa did not serve any time in the military.

“Mr. Figueroa never attended basic training or advanced individual training. He did enlist in the U.S. Army Reserve in February 2003, but received a hardship discharge five months later,” Christian said in a statement to WBZ-TV.
