NWS models forecast a 1 in 3 chance that this could be a "worst case scenario leading to a historical windstorm for nearly all of western Washington that would be long remembered."

Starting Thursday, we will enter a period of extraordinarily active weather with the potential for heavy rain, flooding and a highly dangerous windstorm with the potential to be an historic event." Forecasters are saying this storm may rival the 1962 Columbus Day storm in intensity, with air pressure as low as 28.20 inches or 958 mb (this is at the bottom of the scale on home barometers). The '62 storm caused widespread damage through out the northwest.

weather for the Puget Sound region, and the second swing of wet and windy weather could be a knockout.
The storm is forecast to hit the area Saturday night. On Thursday morning, National Weather Service meteorologist Danny Mercer said the storm had a one-in-three chance of becoming one of the five worst storms in Western Washington history.

[h=3]What to do if the power goes out[/h]
• Never approach or touch a downed power line or anything in contact with the wire.
• Never use barbecues or portable propane or kerosene heaters for indoor heating. They use oxygen and create carbon monoxide that can cause suffocation.
• Turn off lights and electrical appliances, except for the refrigerator and freezer.
• Unplug computers to protect them from possible surges when power is restored.

And analysis later Thursday show those odds increasing.
“Twenty-four hours later (after assessing previous models), it’s looking more and more like that may be the case,”

Oct. 12 is the anniversary of the windstorm that hit the Pacific Northwest in 1962.

after-effects of Typhoon Freda, which released its power when it moved in cooler mid-latitudes.
Similar conditions exist currently over the Pacific with Typhoon Songda, and strong storms are forecast over the next few days.
“Coincidentally, a weakening typhoon in the western Pacific may result in another strong wind storm here late this week,” said Ted Buehner, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “This is how the Columbus Day Storm was born.”

1962, wind speeds were recorded at 83 mph at West Point in Seattle and passed 150 mph
