Family asks for public's help finding woman with Alzheimer's disease who vanished at LACMA
611x344

Police and family members are asking the public to help find a 55-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s disease who went missing during a visit to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Nancy Paulikas was last seen exiting the restroom at LACMA about 3 p.m. Saturday. She appeared to walk toward a museum exhibit, but then she vanished, her husband said.

Kirk Moody said he and his wife had separated from other family members at the museum to use the restroom. He used a men’s restroom nearby and returned to the women’s restroom area, expecting to meet his wife. But she was gone.

This happened just down the road from me. She is likely out wandering the streets. If she had cash on her she might have taken a bus as they stop right by the museum. I'd check with the transit authority. The La Brea Tar Pits are right next to the museum. I surely hope she didn't wait until evening to venture out around the museum and fall into a tar pit. One is quite big.

She appeared to walk towards a museum exhibit, but vanished?

Surely a museum like that must have excellent surveillance cameras, to prevent theft and vandalism.

I don't understand how she could just vanish.

And the tough part is that it is kind of a transportation hub right there. Lots of different lines converge there because of the museum [ LACMA], the Tar Pits [childrens science museum],and the large business complex [Sag/AFtra and many restaurants] are there too. So if she walked right across the street she would be in a crowded business complex. I know there are a lot of security cameras there though.

So many different ways she could have gone if she stepped onto a mass transit bus. :sigh:

There are a bunch of shelter within 10 blocks of the museum. Mostly heading east. Perhaps someone took her to a shelter?

These two pictures don't even look like the same woman to me. I wonder which one is the more current picture?

Hope she is found safe!

My husband and I cared for my MIL with Alzheimer's for three years after the passing of FIL. The expression in the photo on the right appears very similar to the expression my MIL wore quite frequently during the first two years she lived with us. My perception was that she was uncertain and unsure of her surroundings and was apprehensive. The smile in the picture on the left seems to be on the face of a happy, confident woman...my MIL smiled like that only when Lawrence Welk was on the TV. Based on the expression, I making a guess that the picture on the right is the most recent.

I also hope she is found safe....I'm sure she is very scared out there on her own.

It seems Nancy is still missing, even with the family doing a great job searching very hard for her and in an organized way. They have even enlisted the help of several homeless people in the area, to be on the lookout for her.
The last confirmed sighting of her via security camera was the same day she went missing Saturday, Oct 15 at 3:00 PM at 6221 Wilshire, which seems to indicate she was heading west on Wilshire from the museum. An earlier post by the family had stated that they got a positive ID from a security camera at the intersection of Wilshire and McCarthy Vista. I think they might be referring to the same sighting, since 6221 is close to the Wilshire/McCarthy Vista intersection.

If she didn't have money on her, and she isn't communicative and has Alzheimer's, how is she remaining unnoticed...how is she surviving?

Wow, just got around to reading the very detailed report made by a SAR expert. It is evident she spent a lot of time using her expertise to help Nancy's case. Wonderful.

Lots more info, but here's just a few details from the report:

  • Several phrases Nancy says: "I can't do this", "I am so stupid", and "Are you going to kill me?"
  • Nancy appears well-loved and cared for by her family.
  • Searchers should concentrate on a half-mile to one mile radius to the place last seen.
  • It is unlikely Nancy will call out for help, but she might say something like, "Where am I?" or "where is (husband's name)"?
  • The husband had asked the police for canine resources, but was denied (according to the husband) with the police saying the time delay if he went home to get a scent article would prevent the dog's ability to follow her trail. (Is this true?)

I just drove around the area and did not see any signs at all up and down Fairfax or near Fairfax and Third. I was shocked!!! This area should be covered as it falls within the 1/2 mile radius.

They are focusing the search on park areas where they apparently have had a few sightings.
They are doing a good job. I hope they find her soon. She must be miserable, scared and confused. I absolutely feel so sorry for this poor woman. I wish I was closer so I could help search for her. They need help.

Was glad to see her missing poster in Little Tokyo. Hopefully that means that the word is being spread widely. Fortunately/unfortunately this is very near skid row. She would be able to find food and shelter but it's a really rough crowd.

I can't believe she's still missing. Bumping and praying for Nancy. I imagine she is so scared and exhausted.

I'm thinking she must be hiding and scared.

My grandma had kind of lost her senses when she was in her final years. Sometimes she was lucid but other times she was not at all. One time she got lost when my uncle had taken her shopping. They were searching everywhere for her. She was found at an outdoor restaurant where she sat at a table and ignored everyone, even the waiter. She just sat quietly. They called LE for help because they knew she was probably lost.

After all this time I wonder if she could be in a hospital somewhere? Is someone checking the hospitals daily?

Yes, seems they are. "Hospitals and shelters are called daily to check for Jane Does." http://nancyismissing.blogspot.com/2016/10/speech-at-walk-to-end-alzheimers-event.html

This group is so impressive in their search efforts, yet, sadly, Nancy is still missing. According to this article, "the favored theory of the moment is that Paulikas has been scooped up by the system: that she is sitting in some hospital or shelter, free of her MedicAlert bracelet and hindered by aphasia from aiding in her own rescue. Police suggested this possibility, and it would explain why their “ground game” has not found her." This is a great in-depth article on the search for Nancy. In it, it also says Det. L. Saiza of the LAPD’s Missing Persons Unit speculates that a Metro bus driver may have let her on free of charge, as a reason why she has not been seen or located in the area around LACMA (the museum).
