A 13-year-old student who said he was “thrown to the floor” multiple times by a teacher at Edgewood Student Services Center on Sept. 12 is expected to have his leg amputated today as a result of the alleged incident, according to his attorney.

Attorney Renee Tucker, who represents the boy and his mother, said the student is still being treated at the Egleston Children’s Hospital in Atlanta. His family learned the news about the required amputation over the weekend.

Montravious Thomas, the 13-year-old boy who was allegedly body-slammed multiple times by a behavioral specialist, is now learning how to live with an amputated leg.
Renee Tucker, the lawyer representing the student and his family, confirmed Wednesday that the amputation was performed Tuesday night in Children’s Hospital of Atlanta at Egleston.
“He’s doing OK, as much as can be expected,” Tucker told the Ledger-Enquirer in a phone interview. “He was emotional, of course, yesterday and last night. Today, he’s a little better. He’s still coping.
“Egleston has done a pretty good job, and he’s getting the idea of a prosthetic in his mind. They’re sending counselors by and showing him pictures of kids still being active (with a prosthetic leg). So he’s getting used to the idea, but it’s still emotional for him. He doesn’t want anyone to look at his leg.”
The teen’s right leg was amputated below his knee, Tucker said, because part of his broken tibia severed some veins that provided blood flow to his foot. Doctors tried to save his leg by removing an artery from his thigh and getting it to act like a vein, but that effort didn’t work, she said.
Another other injury that required surgery, Tucker said, was repairing his dislocated right knee.
The student has been hospitalized since the Sept. 12 incident, and his mother, Lawanda Thomas, lost her job at a temporary agency because she has spent much of her time by her child’s side, Tucker has said.
According to a Columbus Police Department report, behavioral specialist Bryant Mosley “had to physically restrain” the teen “due to behavioral issues” at the Edgewood Student Services Center, 3538 Forrest Road.

Edgewood coordinator Reginald Griffin has said Sept. 12 was the first day for the student in the AIM program. The assigned school for the teen, a seventh-grader, is East Columbus Magnet Academy, Tucker has said.
Mosley was employed by Mentoring and Behavioral Services when the incident occurred. No charges have been filed against Mosley.

Tucker said school officials initially told the boy they would call an ambulance but decided against it later on.The teacher who was reportedly involved then carried him to the school bus and sent him home without notifying his family, she said.
“They placed an injured student on the school bus,” said Tucker, who stated that her client told officials that his leg was numb, on Oct. 13. “We don’t know the extent that the injuries were worsened by the failure to render aid and certainly by picking him up and seating him on the school bus. Then they had him ride in that same school bus home without any support or stabilization of that leg.”

I don't care WHO this guy worked for. He was an adult mandated to protect these children. At a school! That school needs to step up. IMO these are some of the most vulnerable youth in our society. Many are already broken by what they've lived or by a physical/mental challenge ... they need to be supported and mended. Not broken more!! I'm so enraged I have tears.

I've no clue as to what exactly happened at the school, nor as to when he was actually taken to the doctor after he got home, so I'll hold off on judgement there, for now. However, I'd think a parent would have been called, and an ambulance, if this kid was limping to the point that he had to be carried to the bus. Also, why did the parent lose their job?! Does the FMLA not apply to everyone? Was it repealed?!

The only thing I can think is that the temp agency classifies its workers as contractors? But that wouldn't fit the irs definition. Hope someone is looking into that as well.

MUSCOGEE COUNTY, Ga. - Newly obtained surveillance-camera video seems to refute a claim by the Muscogee County School District that a student was “up and walking and not in distress” after an incident involving a teacher that led to the eventual amputation of the student’s leg.

But the video seems to show a teacher carrying Thomas through the halls of the school. Another camera angle shows that teacher putting Thomas down, but after seeing him unable to put weight on the leg, that teacher picked him up again, put him over his shoulder and carried him to a school bus.

At no time did anyone from the school call for an ambulance.

Outrageous. I hope criminal charges are brought against the person who did it and every person who didn't call for help. And I hope the mom sues the pants off the school.
