Details of Disappearance

Cynthia, a resident of the 10700 block of Georgia Avenue in Wheaton, spoke to her father in Brazil,
as she did every day. That was her last known contact with anyone. Braga's adult sister, who
lives in the area, also has not had any contact with her.

In December 2005, Montgomery County Police learned that Cynthia's husband, Roberto Ferreira Braga, had
physically assaulted his girlfriend in November 2005. He held a knife to her throat and threatened that
no one would ever find her body. He was arrested and charged with first-degree assault on March 10. He was
released on his own recognizance. Police now have reason to believe that foul play is possible in Cynthia's
disappearance.

March 23, 2006 Probe of Woman's Disappearance Renewed

Montgomery police said yesterday that their interest in Roberto Braga's possible role in Cynthia's disappearance was renewed after they charged him this month with assaulting his new girlfriend.
***
According to police and court documents, Roberto Braga has a lengthy criminal history, including charges of threatening a former wife (wife before Cynthia), from jail, in August 2003, about three years after they had divorced.

Cynthia Braga called police April 1, 2003. Speaking through a friend who translated from Portuguese, she told detectives that her husband had pushed her around the bedroom, shoving her against a dresser and bruising her foot, according to a charging document. She said that she tried to call police but that her husband wouldn't let her near the phone.

That day, Cynthia Braga applied for a restraining order against her husband. In the application, she checked off boxes for kicking, punching, slapping, rape or other sexual offense, shoving and threats of violence.

Roberto Braga told police that the last time he saw his wife, the two fought and she left. Neighbors said Roberto Braga moved out a couple of days later.
According to court documents, Roberto Braga has a history of domestic violence with two previous wives, including threats to kill them and dispose their bodies.

Details of Disappearance

Cynthia resided in the 10700 block of Georgia Avenue in Wheaton, Maryland at the time of her disappearance. On June 30, 2003, she called her father in Brazil like she did every day. Since that conversation she has not been seen or heard from.

Most of her family lives in Brazil, but Cynthia's sister lives in the Wheaton area. She has not had contact with Cynthia since her disappearance.

Roberto Braga, Cynthia's husband, is considered a person of interest in her disappearance. In 2006, he was charged with first-degree assault after he allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a knife. The case was later dropped and he has never been linked to Cynthia's disappearance. Her case remains unsolved and foul play is suspected.
