Two Iowa cops found shot to death in 'ambush-style attacks' in Des Moines suburb

Two cops in Iowa were fatally shot early Wednesday and the gunman is on the loose following what appeared to be an ambush-style attack, authorities said.

An Urbandale police officer was found shot to death in a residential neighborhood in the Des Moines suburb around 1 a.m. local time, police said in a statement.

A second police officer in Des Moines was killed nearly 20 minutes later near the first crime scene.

Des Moines police said both shootings appear to have been ambush-style attacks and the assailant is on the lam.

A search is underway for the person who fatally shot them.

Investigators say one officer was sitting alone in his patrol car when he was shot around 1am.

A second officer was found shot to death in his car by police.

There are very few details at this point, and we expect to get an update from police in Des Moines at 5am CST.

Urbandale resident Scott Michael Greene, 46, is being sought by investigators. Greene is 5’ 11” / 180 lbs with brown hair and green eyes. Greene was last known to be driving a blue 2011 Ford F-150 with Iowa license plate 780 YFR. The truck has a silver colored topper with a ladder rack.

Greene is believed to be armed and should be considered dangerous. If seen, please do not approach Greene, but call 911 and report his location.

ETA - rumor, so if this portion of my post is not OK, mods please delete. Apparently he was waving a confederate flag at an Urbandale football game during the national anthem and someone (?) took it from him. I heard this direct from a father of a child who was at the game and saw the incident.

A close friend's husband is an Urbandale police officer who was a responding officer to the shooting. I cannot imagine what those spouse's live with on a daily basis.

I'll bet it took a lot of self-restraint on the part of LE to not send this guy on a one way trip to the afterlife.

I haven't heard anything at all about what the possible motive would be.........anger ? Rage? Insanity ?

It's my understanding that both cops were simply parked and minding their own business right before he blindsided them.

Why would he do something like that ?

Des Moines police said Greene was arrested without incident after flagging down state employee on a road and asking to call 911.
Greene was transported to a hospital in Des Moines. Reports indicate Greene was suffering from seizures.
Police said Greene was not armed when he was captured. Officials are searching for the weapon involved.

In that incident, Greene was accused of approaching a man in the parking lot and shined a flashlight in his eyes. Greene, who lived in the apartments, called the man the N-word and told the man “I will kill you, (expletive) kill you,” according to the complaint. Greene pleaded guilty to a lesser harassment charge on June 30, 2014, and was sentenced to one year of probation...

The police apparently took the flag, not from Greene, but from another person in the stands (at the stadium). That person in the stands is who allegedly stole the flag from the Greene.
From what I heard in the video, the man [Greene] claims that a person in the stands stole his property. The police later told him they have the property to give back to him.
