Miracles do happen. The Socceroos and their miracle man, coach Guus Hiddink, might have left it late. It doesn't matter. Australia have ended a 31-year drought and qualified for the World Cup finals again. This is the sporting story of the year, and for some, the moment of a lifetime.

After three decades of torment and despair, it was perhaps fitting that the Socceroos would need a penalty shoot-out to triumph over a resolute Uruguay last night and take their place among the 32 nations at next year's finals in Germany. The heroics on an unforgettable night came from goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, who made two saves in the shoot-out, and substitute John Aloisi, who struck the deciding spot kick high and firm and then proceeded on a delirious run along the sideline, swamped by players and fans alike.

I had tears in my eyes last night .its been 30 years since we made it and boy was there some celebrating done .
