Poor weather has meant that the crash site, in a mountainous area, is only accessible by land.
However, there was no fire on impact, which has given rescuers hope that more survivors may be found.

Terrible tragedy my thoughts and prayers are with the families of the passengers and crew who have died and with the five people injured. What a tragic year 2016 has been.

"The team, from the small city of Chapeco, was in the middle of a fairy tale season. It joined Brazil's first division in 2014 for the first time since the 1970s and made it last week to the Copa Sudamericana finals — the equivalent of the UEFA Europa League tournament — after defeating two of Argentina's fiercest squads, San Lorenzo and Independiente, as well as Colombia's Junior.

The team is so modest that its 22,000-seat arena was ruled by tournament organizers too small to host the final match, which was instead moved to a stadium 300 miles to the north in the city of Curitiba.

"Chapecoense was the biggest source of happiness in the town," the club's vice-president, Ivan Tozzo, told Brazil's SporTV. "Many in the town are crying.""

There is discussion online that the plane would not have been able to complete its journey with the number of passengers on the flight and would have run out of fuel.

Reports are now saying that player Danilo, who was taken to hospital alive, has since died (from the Mirror link above).
Absolutely awful loss of life but incredible that there were any survivors. I hope they all survive and make fast and full recoveries.

Rumors that the pilot dumped fuel to prevent fire when he knew they were going to crash.

A plane carrying a Brazilian soccer team heading for the biggest game in its history crashed in Colombia on Tuesday, killing more than 70 of the 81 people aboard.

Colombia's civil aviation agency said early Tuesday at least six people have survived the crash, up from initial reports that only five had survived. The death toll varied overnight because of confusion amid the emergency.
Colombian authorities said early Tuesday that three players with Chapecoense, a team from from Brazil's top league, were among the survivors. Two crew members and a reporter also survived.
