Police are believed to be holding Melbourne man Pande Veleski in connection to the stabbing death of a French tourist in the Northern Territory outback.
The ABC understands Mr Veleski, 35, was on under guard in hospital in Alice Springs on Thursday night while he was being medically assessed.
Mr Veleski is yet to be charged, with officers likely to speak with him today, the ABC understands.
The arrest of Mr Veleski came after a man was stabbed to death on Wednesday at a remote spot known as Connors Well, 100 kilometres north of Alice Springs.

The wife of a French tourist killed in an allegedly "unprovoked" stabbing attack at an outback Northern Territory rest stop has left Alice Springs Hospital, where she was being treated for shock.
Aurelie Chorier, 30, was travelling in Australia with her husband Philippe Jegouzo, 33, when they paused at Connor Well about 100 kilometres north of Alice Springs on Wednesday afternoon.
While there, NT Police say they were approached by a man who attacked Mr Jegouzo, stabbing him in the neck.
Mr Jegouzo died at the scene despite efforts to revive him.
Police say the attacker went on the run, abandoning his car 100km further north near Ti Tree community and hiding out in scrubland overnight.
He was found naked and was arrested by police early on Thursday morning following a helicopter and dog squad search.
The ABC understands he is Melbourne man Pande Veleski, 35.

'The stabbing death of tourist Philippe Jegouzo in the Northern Territory outback was "bizarre" and "random" and there were no concerns other travellers were in any danger, NT Police have said.

Detective Superintendent Travis Wurst on Friday said the crime, which saw Mr Jegouzo stabbed in the neck and killed at the remote Connors Well roadside stop about 100 kilometres north of Alice Springs on Wednesday, was bizarre.

'She [the partner of the dead man, Aurelie Chorier,] flagged down a passing car that contained a nurse from the Ti Tree health clinic and the nurse's husband.

The nurse stayed and helped the injured man, while her husband drove another 40km to the Aileron Roadhouse to call for help.'

'Veleski mental health 'not being assessed'

Mr Wurst confirmed no charges had been laid against suspect Pande Veleski, who was captured by police on Thursday morning after he ran naked into the bush near the township of Ti Tree, about 100 kilometres from where the stabbing occurred.

There have been reports Mr Veleski may have been mentally ill, but Mr Wurst said he had not been psychologically assessed since he was taken into custody.'

The police officer also revealed officers were seeking to speak to an Indigenous man who they believe was at the scene of the stabbing about 10 minutes before the incident occurred.

He said police responded to the stabbing as quickly and as promptly as they could.'

'Northern Territory police are searching for a man believed to have left an outback rest stop about 10 minutes before a French tourist was stabbed to death in front of his terrified wife.'

'Northern Territory police are calling for any information that would help them piece together the sequence of events leading up to the attack.

"We would like to trace the last movements of the victim, and also track the movements of the alleged offender to try and piece together a timeline of events," Superintendent Wurst said.

"We are particularly interested in speaking to a man who may have been at the Connors Well rest stop about 10 minutes before this incident occurred."

Superintendent Wurst told reporters the man may be of Aboriginal descent.

"A description of the vehicle is unknown but we understand the driver may have been an indigenous male. He left the area prior to the silver Hyundai driving into the rest stop."

Police have released images of the French couple's red Toyota Rav4 and the attacker's grey Hyundai. They have urged any motorists who may have dash-cam footage of the vehicles involved or the area around Connors Well to pass the vision to police.


"We would also encourage anyone who may have seen any activity at the Connors Well roadside stop at any stage during Wednesday 30 November, not just in the late afternoon, to contact Police."'

A MAN has been charged with murder over the alleged fatal stabbing of a French tourist in the Northern Territory.

Pande Veleski was taken into custody on Thursday after the stabbing death of 33-year-old Frenchman Philippe Jegouzo the previous afternoon.
The charges come almost three days after the alleged stabbing.
Currently under police guard in Alice Springs hospital where he is being treated for dehydration, a Northern Territory police spokesperson said Mr Veleski will face Alice Springs Local Court on Monday.
“The victim’s partner would like to thank the Alice Springs community for their support,” the police statement said.

A BACKPACKER has told how she was moments away from hitching a ride with a man who hours later allegedly murdered a French tourist.

Italian woman Maralina Greco has offered a chilling recollection of her encounter with a man she believes was Pande Veleski, who was charged with the murder of 33-year-old Frenchman Philippe Jegouzo on Saturday.
Veleski was taken into custody on Thursday after the stabbing death. He is currently under police guard in an Alice Springs hospital where he is being treated for dehydration.
Ms Greco told Sky News she was approached by Veleski while hitch hiking near Uluru.
“At some point we stopped hitch hiking to Uluru because I had to go to work the day after so we tried to come back to Alice Springs.
“We asked this guy and he said to us that he could (give us a ride) but only when the sun went down, so at that point my intuition said to me that it was getting really weird and we decided to not take the ride.”

THE man who allegedly stabbed a French tourist to death has been released from hospital.

Pande Veleski, 35 from Mill Park, Victoria, who has been charged with the murder of French national Philippe Jegouzo, is now understood to be in the Alice Springs Correctional Centre awaiting a court hearing Monday morning.
Police will allege Mr Jegouzo, 33, had been standing in a rest stop on Wednesday afternoon when he and his wife, Aurelie Chorier, were confronted unexpectedly by Veleski.
They exchanged pleasantries before Veleski allegedly stabbed Mr Jegouzo in the neck.
It is understood he ran off when Ms Chorier hit him over the head with a picnic table.
She remains in Alice Springs where she spoke briefly to police on Saturday.
She is expected to speak to detectives again after being too distraught to conduct a long interview.

A Melbourne man accused of stabbing a French tourist to death in the Northern Territory has "severe" schizophrenia and has been self-harming in custody, a court has heard.
Pande Veleski, 35, has been charged with the murder of French tourist Philippe Jegouzo at a remote rest stop in Central Australia last week.
Police allege Mr Jegouzo, 33, died when he wasstabbed in the neck in an unprovoked attack.
He died in front of his wife Aurelie Chorier.
Veleski was caught by police after spending a night on the run in bushland.
Judge David Bamber told the Alice Springs Local Court Veleski was too unwell to appear.
"He has been receiving psychiatric care from the Alice Springs Hospital," Judge Bamber said.
Police prosecutors said Veleski had been taken to Alice Springs Hospital after incidents of self-harm in custody.
They told the judge they want to mark Veleski's file "at risk".
Veleski's lawyer, Darwin-based solicitor Maker Mayek, said Veleski's mental health issues required regular medication.
"If he doesn't receive medication his condition gets worse," Mr Mayek said.
"His [Veleski's] condition is not going to be clear until at least the next two to three days."
Veleski is also facing two counts of assaulting police and one count of escaping lawful custody.
He has been remanded in custody to face court on Wednesday.

“It was actually a struggle for a few years after that to get the health service to come in and assist ... I called them on behalf of Pande’s family and desperately pleaded with them saying ‘This is a serious mental illness problem here [and] the family cannot cope’ — they don’t know what to do someone needs to see him.
“And the response was ‘Well what happened, has anything serious happened?’ There was no sense of urgency.”
The family grappled with the schizophrenia diagnosis and the taboo that came with mental health in the community. But nothing could have prepared them for the shock of his arrest for such a violent act.

'A Melbourne man accused of murdering a French tourist at a remote rest stop in Central Australia, may have to be moved to a mental health ward in Darwin, a court has been told.'

'Suspect undergoing medical treatment

The hearing was adjourned until today but Veleski again failed to appear because police said he was still undergoing medical treatment.

Judge David Bamber said Veleski, who has schizoprehnia, may have to be transferred to a mental health unit in Darwin.

"I note that he is not fit to attend court today," said Judge Bamber.

"He may have to be transferred to JRU (Joan Ridley Unit, Royal Darwin Hospital) because of his mental condition."

"Probably that move will involve him being put in the care of Corrections [department]. I will mark him at risk of self-harm."

Veleski 'effectively unrepresented'

Justice Bamber noted Veleski was "effectively unrepresented at this stage", after a prosecutor told the court the accused was no longer seeking legal counsel from a Darwin lawyer.

Veleseki was remanded in custody to appear in court next week.'

THE partner of a French backpacker allegedly murdered by a mentally ill stranger in the remote Northern Territory outback has relived the horror attack in a series of emotional interviews with police.

Aurelie Chorier, 30, and Philippe Jegouzo, 33, had been in Australia for just a week when Mr Jegouzo was allegedly stabbed to death by Pande Veleski after the trio crossed paths at Connor Well rest stop, 95km north of Alice Springs, on November 30.
Ms Chorier allegedly tried to save her partner by hurling a picnic table at Mr Veleski before flagging down a nurse and her husband as they drove past moments later en route to Ti Tree Health Clinic.

News.com.au can reveal that Ms Chorier was so traumatised by what she witnessed that police had to take her official statement over several sessions after the 30-year-old repeatedly broke down.
“She was trying to talk but she kept breaking down and crying, it was horrible, very horrible,” Maya Cifali, who was brought in by detectives to act as Mr Chorier’s interpreter, told news.com.au.
“I was trying my best to support her, to help her give her statement to police and it was so very hard for her and we had to do many sessions.”
Ms Cifali, who is known in the Northern Territory as a tireless campaigner for mental health, refugees and victims of domestic violence, said Ms Chorier struggled to cope in theaftermath.
“She couldn’t eat, she couldn’t sleep ... it’s very traumatising to see your man die in front of your very eyes while you are helpless to do anything,” she said.
“She was in a miserable condition.”

Ms Cifali revealed French consulate officials flew Ms Chorier’s sister from France last Sunday to support her sibling in Alice Springs, where the grieving woman had been staying in a safe house following treatment for shock at Alice Springs Hospital.
It is understood Ms Chorier’s family hails from Annemasse, a city in the Haute-Savoie region of France on the border of Geneva, Switzerland.

It is not clear whether any of Mr Jegouzo’s relatives have travelled to Australia and police and French consulate officials are remaining tight-lipped about when his body is likely to be flown home.
“The French Consulate-General in Sydney has already been able to provide its support to the victim’s family and will continue to provide its assistance in the coming days,” a spokesman said in a statement to news.com.au.
“At this stage, we are not in a position to disclose any private and personal information regarding this case and refer you to the Police’s statements.”

THE grieving wife of a French tourist murdered in Central Australia has returned home, while the man charged with her husband’s murder is yet to face court.

Police allege Pande Veleski met French tourists Philippe Jegouzo, 33 and wife Aurelie Chorier, 30, at a rest stop at Connors Well, 97km north of Alice Springs, and after exchanging “pleasantries” stabbed Mr Jegouzo in the neck.
Ms Chorier tried to save her husband by fending off the allged attack with a picnic table but he was fatally wounded.
The NT News understands Ms Chorier has now returned home to France after being treated for shock in the Alice Springs Hospital.

Veleski was initially due to face court on December 5 2016, the week following the attack, but was unable to appear citing poor health.

A date scheduled later in the week was also abandoned for the same reason.
It was revealed in court that Veleski had been self harming while in custody.
Veleski, who has schizophrenia, was subsequently transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital’s secure mental health facility, the Joan Ridley Unit.

His next court date is set for March 9 and prison guards at the Darwin Correctional Centre are expecting him to be discharged from RDH and placed in the centre’s Complex Behavioural Unit.

The Complex Behaviour Unit accommodates: male and female offenders with mental health and behavioural needs, prisoners placed on custodial supervision orders who have been found unfit to plead or are not guilty of an indictable offence due to mental impairment, and other prisoners who are mentally ill or have complex mental health and behavioural needs.

As well as murder, Veleski has also been charged with two counts of assaulting police and one count of escaping lawful custody.

Ms Chorier was said to be grateful to the community which had provided her with lots of support during her tragic ordeal.

The court has previously heard that Mr Veleski, from Victoria, suffers from “severe schizophrenia”. He did not appear at a scheduled mention on 7 December because of self-harming in the cells. He was subsequently transferred to the Joan Ridley Unit in Royal Darwin Hospital, a secure unit for people with acute mental conditions.

Judge John Birch was on the bench. Crown Prosecutor Stephen Robson asked for an adjournment of eight weeks to allow completion of the brief of evidence. Still outstanding are the crime scene examination report, the forensic biology report and the autopsy report.

The case was adjourned for further mention in early May. Mr Veleski’s legal team were given leave to appear by phone.

No plea has yet been entered in this case.
