Accused teen faces judge for first time
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A 15-year-old from Matthews made his first court appearance Thursday.

He and a classmate, also 15, were recently charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Authorities said the two planned to go on a killing spree at the Bible Baptist Church and Christian School.

Because of their age, neither identity is being released to the public.

The one who appeared in court Thursday showed no emotion during a 15-minute detention hearing. He did not speak.
Detective Randy Call of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the teenager has a history of mental issues.

“I was concerned for the juvenile that’s in custody, and the judge ruled that he would be staying in custody for the benefit of himself and the community,” Call said.

Judge Hugh Lewis also denied the defense request to keep reporters out of the hearing.
