KAMLOOPS - It was a cool November morning, around 6:30, when Henry Vandenberghe left his North Shore home to walk to the bus stop.
He took his usual path from his Thrupp Street home onto Mackenzie Avenue, where Spirit Square now sits. But he never made it onto the bus and he never made it to work that day. Vandenberghe was struck over the head.

A passerby stopped when they saw Vandenberghe and thought he hit his head and called for an ambulance, says Sgt. Lorne Wood of Kamloops RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit.
When he arrived to the emergency room, doctors quickly determined this was no fall.

“When he was… walking to the bus to go to work that morning, he had on a heavy coat, it was cold out that morning, he had a scarf wrapped tightly around his head,” Wood says.

Once emergency officials unwrapped the scarf from his head, they determined this had been an assault. Vandenberghe was bleeding and police were called to the hospital, and to the scene where Vandenberghe was found.

Wood says the assault happened Nov. 28, 2006, and Vandenberghe was taken off life support the next day.

But 10 years later, Wood says a lack of evidence has left RCMP without any answers and they’re turning to the public for help.

What could the possible motive be for killing this gentle and kind man? He was dedicated to the Western Canadian Arts Community. He worked for the Arts Council, Arts Commission, Theatre BC and Volunteer Kamloops and people are broken hearted as stated in his obituary.

Henry will be remembered as a kind, gentle soul; for his quick mind, sharp wit and sense of humour; his dedication and tireless work for the Kamloops Arts Community; as a valued and much loved employee of Western Canada Theatre and as a beloved friend. Henry served on the local Arts Council and was a current member of the Arts Commission. He worked with Theatre BC helping organize both Mainstage and the New Play Festival. He was involved with Volunteer Kamloops. Henry coordinated the opening and closing ceremonies for the 1993 Canada Summer Games. At one point, he worked for Workshop West in Edmonton. We would like to thank all of Henry's physicians and caregivers at Royal Inland Hospital and the RCMP for their tremendous efforts

Kamloops police appeal for leads in decade-old cold case

RCMP continue to look for suspects in a 10-year-old cold case into the killing of a well-known member of the theatre community in Kamloops, B.C.
On Nov. 28, 2006, Henry Vandenberghe was attacked on the sidewalk near a bus stop in north Kamloops. The next day, the 61-year-old died of his injuries.
Sgt. Lorne Wood is currently in charge of the investigation.
"There's nobody that's a really defined suspect that's come out in this," said Wood.
"There [were] a couple of tips where people's names came up and said, 'Hey, you should look at this person,' but no real correlation between the two."
Police believe Vandenberghe left his home on Thrupp Street to catch the bus at around 6:30 a.m. Sometime before 7 a.m., someone struck him in the head with an object multiple times. He was found on the sidewalk about a block away from his bus stop. An ambulance was called and Vandenberghe was taken to the hospital.

“At probably a little after 6:30 in the a.m., Henry left his house on Thrupp Street, walked up to MacKenzie [Avenue] and turned north,” Wood said.

“Right out front of 455 MacKenzie, at about five to 7 a.m., he was struck and knocked down.

Wood said he thinks it’s likely someone saw the incident take place and did not come forward.

“The biggest thing, that area, it’s a busy spot, even at 7 a.m.,” he said. “I find it hard to believe that there isn’t somebody who saw something or heard something and didn’t come forward.”

According to Wood, investigators revisit the Vandenberghe murder on a regular basis to determine if there’s anything new to glean from the evidence they do have.

For example, forensic technology has made many advances in the last 10 years.

“That’s one of the things we look at,” Wood said. “What are some of the things we can revisit for DNA? That is obviously one of the areas we’ve looked at.”

Bumping, someone must have seen something, maybe in the morning rush they thought it was young people horsing around.Hoping someone comes forward with even a tidbit of new information.

"Kamloops arts council was an organization where he was heavily involved," said Marchand. "He also helped organize the opening and closing ceremonies for the Canada Games. There will never be another Henry Vandenberghe. He was unique and fun, and he was incredibly committed to the work we do."

Following Henry's death, Western Canada Theatre created the 'Henry Vandenberghe Memorial Fund' which provides for theatre scholarships as well sending students to the local stage-one acting school.

As for the still unsolved case, Kamloops RCMP is pleading with the public to come forward to find Kenry's killer.

"Hopefully it's something that's jogged a person's memory and they can help us out," said Wood. "I still think somebody saw something."

No family seems to be mentioned at all in the articles, the hospital called the theater with the sad news.

Henry was a creature of habit, so when he wasn't here at his desk at 8:30, we started calling his house and then one of us actually got in the car and drove over to his house to see if he was there," said Marchand. While the staff were looking for him, the theatre company got a call from the hospital informing them that Vandenberghe was there.

No closure for friends and colleagues.
"I've been investigating homicides now for longer than I care to admit and everybody in the homicide unit has cold cases," said Wood. "Nobody likes having an unsolved case sitting on their desk staring at them from day to day."

"Sometimes things just don't come together or something's missed."

As for Vandenberghe's former colleagues, both Wiebe and Marchand said they wanted something meaningful to come out of his murder. They created the Henry Vandenberghe Memorial Fund, which goes to young people interested in participating in the Stage One Theatre School.
"It really speaks to the values that Henry lived, that this was about providing access for everyone to arts education," said Marchand.
"We think he'd have been really happy with the outcome."

[h=2]'Time to come forward'[/h] Police don't have a motive for the case and believe it was a random attack. Though no real progress has been made, Wood still believes there's more information that can be gained — even 10 years after the murder.

"There [are] a lot of street people that hang out here that frequent this area, and they did then, and I just find it hard to believe that something like this happened and nobody's heard anything or has seen anything," said Wood.

Here is a victim that is non-threatening whatsoever. It is in the very early morning, most people are driving to work/school. Two things stand out:

1. Was this a hate crime if Henry may have been viewed as gay? I see no mention either way of this.
2. Was this a botched robbery attempt? He was 61 and clearly no threat. Easy target? Maybe the robbery aspect didn't come into play because a car comes up the road? or a person comes out of their house? So the individual or individuals abandons the crime, which is why he wasn't dead when they arrived.

Someone ALWAYS knows.....
