Man's Wife Seriously Wounded In Apparent Home Invasion

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Albuquerque police have arrested five people in a shooting that killed a real estate developer and seriously wounded his wife.

Albuquerque police officer Trish Hoffman said three men and two woman were arrested early Friday morning. She said the three men were being held on open counts of murder.

Authorities said R.J. Schaefer, 67, was found dead in the doorway of his home Thursday morning. His wife, Olga, was found in a bedroom with a gunshot wound. She was in serious condition Friday at an Albuquerque hospital.

Bryan Jacob Sandoval ended up pleading guilty to first-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated burglary. He received a life sentence plus 19 years. Prosecutors believe that Sandoval was the shooter in the attack.

Edward Anthony Esquer pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence and conspiracy to tamper with evidence, conspiracy to steal a car, receiving stolen property, and conspiracy to commit forgery. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Jeff Fietek pleaded guilty to forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery and possession of methamphetamine.

Penny Rasmussen pleaded guilty to forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery and possession of meth.

Bene Vigil, who was 17 at the time, was charged in Children's Court with harboring or aiding a felon.

The gunfire left Olga Schaefer with a severed colon, fractured arm, disfigured breast and long-term mental trauma.

Last April, the young man authorities call an nonredeemable thrill killer was sentenced to life plus 19 years for the Nov. 17, 2005, shooting death of real estate developer R.J. Schaefer and the near-fatal wounding of his wife, Olga, at the couple's Arroyo del Oso home.

Bryan was 20 when he shot the Schaefers, who had caught him breaking into their home to get items to trade for meth.
