UT - Couple face charges of 'horrendous' sexual abuse

Couple face charges of 'horrendous' abuse
Adoptive parents: They allegedly had sex with the kids, age 7 to 15, encouraged them to have sex with one another

'Horrendous' abuse: The children, ages 7 to 15, also were encouraged to have sex with each other

A southern Oregon couple who adopted seven children in the past five years - including four from Utah - are now accused of "horrendous" sexual abuse of some of the kids.
Police say Greg and Colleen Miller, of Sunny Valley, Ore., forced at least four of their children to have sex with each of them, as well as with one another.
The Utah children - a boy and three girls now ages 9, 11, 13 and 15 - were taken into custody by the state's Division of Child and Family Services in 1997 after their parents, both drug addicts with lengthy criminal records, chronically abused and neglected them, said Carol Sisco, a spokeswoman for DCFS.
For the next three years, the children drifted in and out of foster care homes. In January 2000, the Millers applied to become foster parents, undergoing criminal background checks and a home study.

One thing I do not understand is why when the kids are old enough to talk, why aren't social workers periodically meeting with these kids and talking with them? Why does this type of mistreatment go on for months or even years without being detected?
I would think that a child in foster care should be met with privately and encouraged to talk about their situation and treatment. Yes they are going to get some petty info. Yes they will even get some false accusations. But even with the false accusations- if a kid is making the accusations then maybe a new placement is needed for it. IMO social workers should be meeting privately with the kids at least every 3mos. and with the children as a family group at least annually to discuss their arrangements and how it is working out.
If the state feels the parent was neglecting the child to the point that they had to be removed from their home, they should then be totally responsible for making sure the kids are ok where they are!
Just when I think that I have seen the most depraved things a human can do to another human, somebody posts a new story...........

Why is it that when a custodial parent fails to provide for a child it is called neglect and is a criminal matter. But when a non custodial parent fails to provide it is called failure to support and is a civil matter?

I wonder how drug addicts with lengthy criminal records were able to adopt 7 children?

I don't think it was the drug addicts with lengthy criminal records that adopted the children. It was their biological parents that were the drug addicts/criminals and that is why they were taken away. At least that's my take on it.

The article says the children were taken into custody after their parents chronically abused and neglected them

if it's so common for demented perverts such as these to adopt children, which it seems to be-- then why does everyone always say how difficult it is (to adopt)....??

Most want babies, just like people looking for pets prefer puppies and kittens to dogs & cats. Its difficult to adopt babies, largely because there is more demand than supply. Especially white babies. Most kids you can adipt are over the age of 4 and often they have emotional or physical handicaps that make them less "desirable" for average couples looking to have a family.

I just saw this on our local news. The "dad" is a fat, white man with long greasy blond hair. Their house was a couple of single wides connected togehter. I wouldn't allow these people to adopt a dog by the looks of their housing arangement. The news showed at least three rusty refrigerators out front. It looks just like the compound of that guy who went on a shooting rampage a few years back and when they went to his property they found his whole family murdered and discovered his grandchildren were also his children. I can't believe the state would allow children into a that dump.

It's difficult to adopt a newborn, but it is not difficult to adopt an older child out of foster care. That's my understanding, anyway.

I was shocked that the father even had a mock marriage ceremony with one daughter, complete with wedding dress. I hope all these kids get some intensive therapy, or this may pass down through the generations of some of these kids' families.

How heartbreaking for those poor children. What a sick, sick world we live in. Prayers for their mental health and physical well-being, and that they soon find a true family who will love and care for them.
