'It truly was an accident,' hit and run driver says as he goes to prison for killing pedestrian

It bothers Bonnie Deimler deeply that her 25-year-old son Charles died alone in December 2016 after a hit-and-run driver struck him as he walked along a Cumberland County highway.

"My son laid on the road with no one there to comfort him or hold his hand as he died," she told county Judge Albert H. Masland on Tuesday.

That driver, 49-year-old John M. Sullivan of Newville, stood just a few feet away as she spoke. Moments after Bonnie Deimler finished, Masland sentenced Sullivan, a Pennsylvania Department of Corrections employee, to 4 to 8 years in state prison.
