IL - Man Arrested After Standoff, Hostage Ordeal, Aurora
A man accused of holding a woman and her three children hostage in her Aurora condo was arrested Monday after a standoff with police.
Patrick Vershawn Scott, 24, broke into his ex-girlfriend's home at the Sunnyside Condominiums in the 1000 block of South Elkhart Way late Sunday night, police said. The 22-year-old mother escaped early Monday morning when Scott fell asleep and ran to a neighbor, police said.
After the man refused to release the children or come out, SWAT team members entered the apartment and rescued the toddlers at about 11:15 a.m., 7News reported. They were taken to a waiting police car until an ambulance arrived to check them out. They were not hurt.
Police entered the residence but did not find Scott at first. A K9 crew finally found Scott hiding in a crawl space four apartments away.
Scott was being held without bond for violating a restraining order and for on an outstanding domestic violence warrant in Denver, police said. He's also being investigated for second-degree burglary and kidnapping. Scott also has a record of domestic violence, including an incident at the apartment Wednesday, according to a police spokesman.

Why is it that when a custodial parent fails to provide for a child it is called neglect and is a criminal matter. But when a non custodial parent fails to provide it is called failure to support and is a civil matter?
