"Tuolumne County sheriffs investigators said they were tipped off to possible human remains found inside a mine shaft just outside of Groveland on Saturday.
Investigators said the remains were found on public land, however, FOX40 was not allowed access to the private road that leads to the mine shaft.
The department posted pictures of their investigators near the mine shafts entrance on Wednesday.
Unstable conditions made it difficult for their team to safely enter and recover the remains.
Investigators have not said how old the remains are, who they may be, or how this may have happened.
A lot of people go mining up here, you know when I was a kid we used to go on all the mine shafts and I just wonder if he had a little gold fever looking for gold or something? Dusty Blue, a Tuolumne County resident said.
Most residents FOX40 spoke to said they believe the death may have been accidental.
Probably just an accident, Cody Weatherington, a Big Flat Oak resident said.
They said this kind of find doesnt happen too often in Tuolumne County. They hope the victims family will finally get some answers as to how they died and ended up in a mine shaft..."
