A woman was arrested this morning on suspicion of child endangerment after a 2-year-old boy she was baby-sitting was struck and killed by an Amtrak train Monday in San Jose, police said. Police identified the woman as 20-year-old Katrina Marie Hatton of San Jose.
Hatton was not the baby sitter originally hired by the toddler's mother, said San Jose police spokesman Officer Enrique Garcia. The original baby sitter, who was hired to take care of the boy and his 4-year-old brother, apparently handed off the children to Hatton, who was a friend or roommate, Garcia said.
Hatton was also caring for her own 3-month-old baby when the train hit the boy, Garcia said.
Nicole Wilson of San Jose, the mother of the dead child, expressed disbelief at the scene.
"I was at work and I get a call that she left them with a girl I don't even know," she said.
According to police, Hatton was walking east across the tracks with the 2- and 4-year-old boys at an uncontrolled crossing at Blossom Hill Road and Monterey Highway around 11 a.m. She left the boys on the side of the tracks while she returned to retrieve a stroller holding her child.
The 2-year-old followed her back onto the tracks and was struck at 11:03 a.m. by the southbound Coast Starlight train. The boy's name has not been released.
The train was delayed about five hours while authorities investigated the incident.
