Still Seeking Justice in Sullivan County Cold Case Murder

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police Investigators are still looking for justice for 51-year-old Jeanette Benson.

On the evening of January 2, 1981, Benson had returned to her Farmersburg home from grocery shopping.

That’s where she was found shot to death.

(...)

Jeanette’s husband, Emory, was at work in Terre Haute at the time of his wife’s murder.

Emory noticed his wife’s car was pulled to the side of the driveway where she normally did not park. Police theorize the intruder’s vehicle blocked part of the driveway.

Cottom adds, “We have been able to establish that an intruder was inside the home when she arrived. Mrs. Benson not knowing it was an intruder, thought that it was someone giving her husband a ride home.”

(...)

Cottom says, “We really feel like that car is a central part of this investigation. The neighbors kept a close eye on one another. They knew that that car did not fit there. And that car was there just moments prior to Mrs. Benson’s arrival.”

Cottom says the car was a “robin egg blue” Plymouth Valiant.

An unsolved southern Indiana murder case has turned 40 years old.

''It was January 2nd 1981 when 51-year-old Sarah Jeanette Benson returned home to Farmersburg after shopping in Terre Haute.

She was surprised by an intruder and murdered.

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department says investigators have exhausted many leads over the years but not have been able to gather enough evidence for an arrest.

Witnesses have told police they saw a robin egg blue colored Plymouth Valiant outside the home at the time of the killing, another described the car as a Chevy with shiny blue paint and another said the car was a very clean sedan.

A neighbor reported seeing a tall thin white man possibly in his 20’s who was wearing a vest and seen getting out of the car and knocking on the door. Police believe he was the killer.

Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom says his office is still seeking the public’s help in solving the crime. He says over time relationships change and it’s not uncommon that someone with information could come forward. They say the killer would now be in his 50’s.

Anyone with information on the 1981 murder of Sarah Jeanette Benson of Farmersburg is urged to contact the Sullivan County Sheriff at 812-268-4308 or Indiana State Police.''

Neighbors described seeing a blue sedan parked in Benson's driveway just prior to her returning home. One of the witnesses thought the vehicle was an older Plymouth Valiant, describing it as “robin egg blue.” A second witness thought the vehicle was possibly a Chevrolet, describing it as having "shiny blue paint.” A third witness described a “clean” bluish green sedan.

One neighbor observed a white male near the home. The male, who was wearing a down vest, was seen knocking on the Bensons’ front door. The male was described as tall and thin, possibly in his 20’s at the time. Investigators believe this man was likely the killer.

A recent development has led investigators to release a photograph of similar shoes that the killer may have worn.''
