'The disappearance of a mother of two from Victoria's Mornington Peninsula is now being treated as suspicious, as police call for information on her whereabouts.

Joanne Martell, 45, was reported missing by her relatives last year, but detectives said her last confirmed sighting was in mid-2015, when she dropped her dog off at a friend's house.'

"Joanne is a bit of a freestyle young woman, she's lived at various addresses in the area, but it is out of character for her not to contact family and friends," he said.

"She's got a teenage daughter who she stays in contact with who lives interstate and she's got a son in his early 20s who she also keeps in contact with."

Ms Martell was a popular person in the area and friends were concerned she had not been in contact

Police said she had also not used her bank account or social media.

"She's done none of the usual stuff that even if you were trying to lay low we'd be able to track," Detective Inspector Hughes said.

The seaside towns of Rosebud and Dromana attract large numbers of tourists during the summer months, which may have led to some time passing before friends noticed her absence, Detective Inspector Hughes said.

"She travels with some pretty transient people … Rosebud and Dromana during the summer months are highly populated, but during winter months [it] is quite a quiet community," he said.

"This is probably one of the reasons she's not flagged early, the people who really know her probably see her more around the colder months of the year."

A call to has CrimeStoppers provided new details and reignited the investigation, but police are appealing for more information about Ms Martell's movements.

"We've got nothing to suggest she's got enemies," Detective Inspector Hughes said.

"This will be someone who knows her, I'm sure … unless she's unfortunately come into contact with someone who is more sinister."

Strong possibility IMO:

Body found in bushland at Sorrento on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula
UPDATED FRI JAN 13 17:20:48 EST 2017

'A body has been found at Sorrento on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula after police received a tip-off from the public.

The remains were located not far from a car park at Diamond Bay.

Detective Mick Hughes from the homicide squad said officers received information that a body may be in the area, after police last week called for help to find a woman missing in the region.

But he said it was unclear if the cases were linked.

"Since we did media recently in relation to a missing person we've had a variety of information coming in," he said.

"Someone has said to us 'we believe that there is someone here and you should have a look', and within a very short time of starting the search we found the human remains.'

"There's nothing to connect this to any other high-profile missing person investigations. [But] we really don't know."
