Fears growing for missing RAF serviceman who vanished after night out

    28 September 2016

Concerns were growing today for the safety of a young military [service]man who vanished after a night out and may have tried to walk eight miles back to his base.

    [...]

Camera operators saw him getting up and walking off - but he failed to return to Honington, the headquarters of the RAF Force Protection who guard UK military installations around the world.

Despite an appeal to motorists, villagers along the serviceman’s route and a search by the Suffolk police helicopter there has been no trace of him.

Corrie is described as white, 5ft 10ins tall, medium build, with short light brown hair. He was wearing a light-pink polo shirt and white jeans when last seen.

If someone can find conflicts in the time line, just give me the time to be amended with a link and I'll amend the TL.
For some reason I'm not getting some people's messages...? Unsure what's happening.

    VICTIM FRIENDLY

Websleuths is a victim friendly forum. Attacking or bashing a victim is not allowed. Discussing victim behavior, good or bad is fine, but do so in a civil and constructive way, and only when such behavior is relevant to the case.

The "victim friendly" rule extends to the family members of victims and suspects. Sleuthing family members, friends, and others who have not been designated as suspects is not allowed. Don't make random accusations, suggest their involvement, nor bash and attack them. Posting their personal information, including names, addresses, and background data -- even if it is public -- is not allowed. That does not mean, however, that statements made by family members and other third parties cannot come into discussion as the facts of the case are reported in the media.

    Please Note:

Corrie's family members fall into the above "victim friendly" category. You may not suggest or imply that any family member has knowledge of, or is involved in his disappearance. ZERO TOLERANCE.

Please be sure you're familiar with Websleuths' rules. It is your responsibility to know them.

All previous mod and admin reminders still stand.

Fresh thread folks. Can we skim it back to the bare facts & focus on those? The last thread made my head hurt.

Think a brief summary of last thread's phone/pings/ etc conclusions/stumbling blocks would be great.

Lot of that technical stuff was way over my head so yes would appreciate someone from that group- who were doing the heavy-lifting on that aspect- would sum it up.

Post brought forward on request of forum member(s):

.......I've just come out of the 'back room offices' of three major mobile phone providers; A, B & EE. All were very helpful, not linked in any way and totally separate in their respective businesses. The information that has been gleaned by myself is an interpretation and based in fact. Please be understanding of that when commenting.

    Nokia Lumia 435

This phone was launched in January 2015 and was intended as a single sim use only phone. At the same time a dual sim phone was made available through the European markets but NOT in the UK. We do not know if this Nokia Lumia 435 was a single sim or a dual sim phone. I previously posted an image suggesting a dual sim phone for reference purposes only. The launch date of January 2015 is an important date as the contract came with a 24 month deal. If the phone was bought new, approximately six months BEFORE the end of the contract (July 2016) a new phone upgrade would have been offered. Again, presuming it had been given to him by his mother after her upgrade offer, it would suggest a UK model as a dual sim phone wouldn't necessarily be required in the UK. Additional interesting point to make is that a usual upgrade from a Nokia Lumia 435 is either a Nokia Lumia 550 or a Samsung Galaxy J5. What's N's new phone?

    EE Coverage

According to the various phone provider technicians, EE masts overlap with a great deal of completeness. 99% of the country is covered. That is not to say that the signal strength is excellent....just that the country is covered.

When a phone such as Corrie's moves away from a mast, it's signal strength lowers. A bit like a lizards tongue stretching and stretching until it in ally lets go. At that immediate point, the phone scans for another mast and the lizards tongue shoots out again at that mast. The darting is momentary. The mast speak/receive 'door' is never closed unless the phone is switched off, immersed in water, battery removed, crushed, damaged etc. The bar strength depends on the masts line of sight with the phone, air density, trees, building, signal strength etc. On the whole, constant speak/receive status...that is until the SIM card is removed.

If a SIM card is removed, the phone is effectively an electronic toy. The SIM card communicates to the masts VIA the mobile phone. No SIM card, no speak/receive. EE masts are also used by Orange and T Mobile. To confuse things even more, Virgin buy airtime from EE.

So, Corrie's phone had a SIM card in when it travelled from BSE to BM otherwise they wouldn't have been able to tell it had moved.

    Phone access.

NO ONE is allowed access to a phone. Not even the police. The only way authorities are to access phone data is through the IMEI number which every phone has. This is a unique phone identifying number for a specific phone. Once that number is known, an application can be made through the Data Protection Act via the police to access phone contacts. Apps, music, photos, videos, Internet usage can be accessed through his home computer if backed up. Corrie's phone used a Microsoft based system so I see no reason why this wasn't the case for the family. Indeed, this would explain why reasonably quick access was gain to his phone details if it belonged to N prior to Corrie owning it. N would presumably have the IMEI number, computer back up, and access to his SM accounts. Networks will NOT provide relevant information unless via the police in conjunction with the Data Protection Act.

    Phone signal strength

With regards to the Faraday Cage suggestion, this all depends on the approximate position of the phone, it's encasement material, encasement leakage potential and mast. From what I can gather from technical experts, there is no reason why a phone cannot send or receive information or voice signals unless it's by the side of a large electrical unit such as a generator or encased in lead or thick concrete. A close filing cabinet would be possible because of the relatively thin metal surrounding the phone. A slightly open drawer would afford an easier signal leakage.

The technicians went into great detail and every aspect of my queries were answered in fullest satisfaction.

Just like to say, I think its odd he was never reported AWOL, as the process is; report AWOL first and then go to Missing etc. O find this odd that he has never been reported AWOL. It screams to me something was known right away.

You cant just decide to not report him as AWOL based on his work ethic or it being out of character.

In the military, if you dont show for work, your AWOL 1st.

Slightly OT as far as genuine sleuthing goes but I've just been reading about the 'wisdom of crowds' https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wisdom_of_Crowds

one of the criteria for creating a 'wise' crowd is local knowledge. It struck me on reading back during the last thread that it seems like it's mainly local people or people like me who have first hand knowledge of the area are leaning towards misadventure on the walk home Iwith or without innocent vehicle involvement part of the way). I am probably basing this on too small a sample but I'm interested to see if my theory has legs.

It's hard to believe that he has walked home because as far as we know:

-He could not walk out of that area without being seen on CCTV. One person (I think a relation of Corrie's) was on the news and said something along the lines of - it is possible to walk out, but he'd have to position himself very well and basically he didn't think that likely at all.

-I don't believe there has been anybody that has come forward that has been sure they saw Corrie after he disappeared off camera? No sightings?

-It is a ruddy long way home. It is PITCH BLACK the vast majority of the way. You could not walk home.....you would not be able to see a thing, you would end up walking into a ditch.....which may even explain it, but surely a guy in the army could get himself out a ditch.

-I can't really see how he could accidently get killed on the walk home. Maybe a hit and run, taking the body with them. In Great Livermere, which is a village on the most likely route (IMO) that he would have walked home, there is a lake of some kind. It seems people sometimes end up going missing and they are in water, but I can't understand how someone just gets lost walks into water and drowns. There is also a weird looking sandy area with lines running towards a centre point - what is that place?

I understand he may have got a lift part of the way home, but still not sure how you die on that journey home, or where you could be dropped off that is lit up enough to walk home.....I don't see any roads with lights on them around there.

People have commented that they want people to go off facts etc, which I understand......

So going off facts.....walking home - does it make sense?

Personally I would more or less rule it out.

All very valid points db. If Corrie attempted to get himself back to base he has a far better chance of accomplishing it imo being a young fit services trained guy.
I think his alcohol intake would play a huge part though and these symptoms of hypothermia are self explanatory as to a simple accident happening, because when this happens people stop behaving responsibly
As has been mentioned before, Adrian Lynch's case has many similarities, but a very sad outcome found 8 months later.
I think nothing should be ruled out.

    Moderate to severe hypothermia

As your body temperature drops, signs and symptoms of moderate to severe hypothermia include:
Shivering, although as hypothermia worsens, shivering stops
    Clumsiness or lack of coordination
    Slurred speech or mumbling
Confusion and poor decision-making, such as trying to remove warm clothes
    Drowsiness or very low energy
Lack of concern about one's condition
    Progressive loss of consciousness
    Weak pulse
    Slow, shallow breathing

    (apologies for the medical info)
