Tattoos, prints help identify woman

[font=Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular]The state Office of the Medical Investigator has identified a woman’s body found at the Chaves County dump station, and deputies are asking for help locating her car.[/font]

[font=Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular]The body, which was found Sunday morning in a Dumpster, has been identified of 45-year-old Joann Mendoza Chaves, aka Joann Mariscal, said Chief Deputy Rob Coon of the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office. [/font]

Coon said a medical investigator identified Chaves using fingerprints and tattoos. He said that Chaves died of blunt force trauma to the head and that deputies Tuesday did not have any suspects.

Deputies are investigating the woman’s death as a homicide, Coon added. [font=Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular]He asked for the public’s help in finding Chaves’ car, which is a black 1989 Ford Mustang convertible with a white top and chrome spoked wheels....[/font]

Probe of woman’s death
continues; her car found


Chaves County sheriff’s deputies have located the car of a woman found dead in a Dumpster and continue to investigate her death.


[font=Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular]Chief Deputy Rob Coon said the black 1989 Ford Mustang belonging to Joann Mendoza Chaves was found by an Eastern New Mexico Medical Center employee in the back parking lot of the hospital. The car was found around 5 p.m. Tuesday. Coon said deputies searched the car Wednesday night.

Tip leads to arrest in Dumpster body case

[font=Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular]Chaves County Sheriff’s detectives have arrested a Roswell man in the slaying of Joann Chaves and continue to investigate her death.[/font]

[font=Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular]Richard Gibson, 48, was arrested at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and charged with one open count of murder and one count of tampering with evidence in the death of the 45-year-old Chaves, aka Joann Mariscal. Her body was found in a Dumpster at the Chaves County dump station Nov. 13. The state medical examiner’s office said she had been bludgeoned.[/font]

[font=Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular]Detective Sgt. Carl Padilla said investigators searched the city dump site at Brasher Road and Main Street on Wednesday looking for a weapon. Detective Charles Yslas would not say what kind of weapon detectives were looking for.[/font]

[font=Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular]Padilla said detectives believe the weapon used in the killing was put in a dumpster at the Chaves County dump station along Railroad Lane between Berrendo and Pine Lodge roads. That Dumpster was taken to the city dump site and the contents were dumped and covered, Padilla said. That was not the Dumpster in which Chaves’ body was found.[/font]
