Taking out the trash can be a dangerous endeavor!

. . .His younger brother, Michael, was the last to see him dragging our trashcans up from the curb while waiting for a carpool ride to his part-time job. . .

With the story of Jason Jolkowski in mind I ran a search to see what I could learn about people becoming the victem in a crime while just taking out the trash. The results of a simple web search on the subject were a bit startling.

***************
68. When John Graves, 81, of Greensboro, North Carolina, took the trash out at night, he also took a pistol. He needed it one evening when someone grabbed him. Noticing the would-be robber had two accomplices, Graves pulled his pistol and shot and wounded the teenager. "All the evidence showed that he ... was defending himself," the local prosecutor said. 656. Thomas Hall was taking out the trash at Tom's Liquors in Odenton, Mayland, when an armed robber approached with a gun in hand. Approached from behind, Hall drew his own handgun and spun around, pointing the pistol at the suspect, who then ran away. Nothing was taken and no one was injured in the incident. 822. A 56-year-old employee of the Illinois attorney general's office turned the tables somewhat on an intruder to the office's parking garage. The victim let the man into the garage after having been convinced that he was there to dispose of the garbage. Once inside, the intruder indicated he had a gun and intended to rob the victim. What the man didn't know is that the victim, already suspicious, had retrieved a .22 handgun from his vehicle. When the imposter garbage collector attempted to "pick up" cash from the victim rather than trash from the garage, the employee pulled his pistol and ordered the would-be robber to the ground. The employee held the man until the arrival of police, who discovered that the holdup man possessed only a crack pipe. The employee's gun had been unloaded and in a case, a legal way to transport it, police said. (The State Journal Register, Springfield, IL, 1/16/98)

Where is Jason?

I never really thought about it, but you would be really vulnerable when taking out the trash.
Your hands are full, you are relaxed because you are in a familiar area, and you only expect to be out of the house momentarily. I've been known to take out the trash in my pajamma's  Guess I had better start paying more attention!

Again, another vulnerable point. Most people would never think they are in danger taking the trash out. This is what we do almost daily. It is like to have outthink the pervs because what we are thinking about doesn't enter into their minds. It is a really hard world out there.

I wonder how many other vulnerable normal daily activities exist - I know about getting into your car in parking lots, but I'd never heard about the dangers of taking out the trash.

Amazing what you learn here.

I know that my husband and I never unlock the door or turn off the car until the garage is closed, it would only take a second for someone to run under the door.

I would think going to the end of the driveway to get the paper may be considered dangerous.

The thing I learned in researching this was that criminals, like predator animals, will hunt us where we normally appear, be it watering hole or where we set our trash cans. In my area trash pickup happens only once a week on a certain day so they know you won't willingly miss that date.

Would a stranger to the area know what day? I don't know how long it would take a stranger to learn what date trash pickup was in a certain part of town but I am thinking it sounds less like like a crime by stranger-to-the-area if trash pickup happens only on a certain day.

That was really interesting. My trash is picked up on Thursday and half of the time I forget about it until around midnight or later so I'm running around hauling the trash and recycling out to the curb. I go in my nightgown and haven't given it a thought. I guess I figure at my age no one is going to abduct me or do anything else to me. Guess I had better think again because age really doesn't matter when it comes to crime.

What I always wonder is how abductors manage to take adults? They must use guns and force them into a vehicle. Look how tall Kelly's boy is. Someone would have a fight on their hands if they didn't have a weapon wouldn't they?

Speaking of Kelly's son...do they know for sure that he was taken from the home area or was that just the last place he was seen? If his ride didn't show for some reason he could have started walking or hitching a ride.

It is amazing (and scary) when you think about how many routines we have and how vulnerable we make ourselves by practicing certain rituals at the same time of day, same time each week...taking out the trash, going to the bank or ATM, grocery store, convenience store late at night etc. It really makes you realize how things are ... you can never be off guard...sad.

Actually Jason i believe took the trash out fine, he was waiting for a car to pick him up to take him to work. witnesses saw him get into a car (but don't know if it was the one destined to take him to work or not) and he was never seen or heard from again

I'm not sure where you received your information. Perhaps you are confusing it with another case.

Jason was last seen in our driveway by both the neighbor and our then 13 yr old son. He was bringing in the trash cans. He was then to walk to a high school 7 blocks away to be picked up and taken to work. He never made it there.

He was never seen again after being seen in our driveway. There were no witnesses seeing him get into a car.

He disappeared between our driveway and the school. There are no known witnesses. We know that someone knows what happened. Why they do not tell is what we do not know.

This isn't any different than thousands of other missing person's cases. They are there one moment and gone the next.

that's the sad thing about missing person's cases the just disapear in seconds, i agree someone proberly knows something as well.

Even if the witness is concerned that they might get in trouble for providing the information, they could do it anonymously. So there's really no excuse except a basic lack of humanity.

not really, if you see a person just walking down the street and hop into a car personally, i wouldn't find that suspcious at all unless it was forced entry then yes i would mention something. however, in a lot of cases there are just no witnesses

I was responding to Kelly's statement that "We know that someone knows what happened." I'm not talking about people who don't know they were witnesses.

AND so was i :innocent: some people at that time might not know they are witnesses and if they know now they might not see it as being valuable enough for questioning. in reference to his brother being the last person seeing him, now did he see him just walking down the street?! :waitasec:
