Nothing that would be considered a forest. There may be a few trees/bushes near the Elbow River, though. But not enough to conceal a body or bodies.
The crime scene is pretty close to the downtown area.

Anyone who is more local can probably give better insight than me.
I don't live in Calgary, but I do have general knowledge about the city.

Google streetview shows this at the end of their street (about 4 houses down from the Liknes' home):

It's the Elbow River Pathway (iirc) that runs alongside the river.

Nathan O'Brien, 5, and grandparents Alvin and Kathy Liknes were last seen in June 2014

Hundreds of people packed into the Calgary Courts Centre on Wednesday as a jury of 16 members was selected for the trial of a man accused of killing Alvin and Kathy Liknes and their five-year-old grandson Nathan O'Brien.

Douglas Garland was charged with three counts of first-degree murder after the three mysteriously disappeared from a Calgary home in June 2014.

[...]

The bodies of Nathan and the Likneses have never been found.

The boy was at an impromptu sleepover with his grandparents, but the three were gone when Jennifer O'Brien arrived to pick up her son the next morning. The inside of the home was covered in blood.

After a two-week search, Garland was arrested and charged with three counts of murder.

[...]

Though a typical jury consists of 12 members, in this case 16 people were selected — 14 jury members plus two alternates — to protect against a mistrial in the event anyone drops out due to unexpected circumstances.

Eleven men and three women were chosen to form the jury.

Nathan O’Brien’s family hopes for justice ahead of Douglas Garland’s murder trial
By Nancy Hixt
January 12, 2017

The victims’ family has issued a statement ahead of one of the most high-profile murder trials in Calgary’s history, set to begin Monday.

“It has been two-and-a-half years since Nathan, Alvin and Kathy were taken from us,” reads the statement released by Calgary police on behalf of the families.

“Our pain has not lessened during this time. The next five weeks of this trial will be very difficult for us. We can only hope that at the end of this grueling time we will find justice for Nathan, Alvin and Kathy.”

[...]

The jury trial is scheduled for five weeks and will begin with an opening statement to the jury by the prosecution.

I feel much the same. Mostly I think I want to know why. Not the gory details. Just why oh why did he have to take 3 lives and especially a little boy?
And a measure of justice - if he did it, if it's proven, then a guilty verdict and a long hard sentence.
I've been so frustrated at the slow progress of another Alberta trial, the Travis Vader trial, and I pray the O'B and L families don't face such delays in seeing justice.
Imho

I think the one question where we have the answer is 'why'.

Garland has a long criminal history and he seems to view himself as clever enough to get away with breaking the law.

Garland was angry with Liknes over money and recognition. He believed that he contributed to a patent that Liknes filed, and was angry that his name was not included on the patent. This was compounded by something (probably financial) that is related to the weekend that Liknes declared bankruptcy, liquidated his house contents, and declared plans to either move to a small town outside of Edmonton, or to his condo in Mexico. I would like to know whether the Mexico condo has been sold, and if not, who is on title, as well as who contributed money for the purchase. If Garland money was used to purchase the condo, I would like to know whether that money has been repaid.

Alvin and his wife were murdered because Garland was angry with them. Nathan was murdered because he was a witness.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks to Silly Billy and Cold Pizza for working and moderating on this thread. Great Job as always.

I'm getting caught up on this triple murder so please forgive me if my questions are naive.

What solid evidence to that have that a murder took place and that Garland is the one who did the killing?

Is it all circumstantial?

If you can point me to a good comprehensive article I would appreciate it or if it is an easy explanation that won't take up too much of your valuable time that would be great too.

After the discovery that the three people were missing, police released a photo of a truck (with some distinctive features) in relation to the disappearance of the couple and their grandson. That led to the suspect, but there was not yet evidence tying him to the disappearance. At the scene of the crime, there was sufficient blood, and blood drag marks outside the house, for police to state that at the very least the missing persons were in "medical distress".

The couple's daughter, and mother of the child, discovered the scene.

Police obtained a search warrant for the residence of the suspect - who was living on his parent's acreage North of Calgary. A tent was set up over the area of a burn pit, and a grid search was performed on the property.

Canadian law does not permit the disclosure of trial evidence prior to the trial, so we don't know much more than that at the time. However, given that intact bodies have not been found, and there is no search for the victims, it's not much of a stretch to suspect that evidence of the victims was found in the burn pit. Additionally, it was reported early on that the neighbours observed a fire on the property that went on for hours through the night. It probably took a couple of days for the bodies to burn to bone fragments, ash, and teeth.

What's his defence going to be?

I think there is enough evidence for a conviction, and that it would be foolish to not present a defence ... at the same time, what would it be?

Is there anything that he can say that would absolve him for the murders? His psychological evaluation came up clean and fit to stand trial, so presumably he was aware of his actions when he committed the murders.

Was he so angry that he was in a complete rage and temporarily lost his mind?

Good synopsis Otto! I'll try to find the article that described the scene at the house for Tricia. It was a later article that spoke to blood in the stairwell and in two beds. I think it was the same article that referencd the dumbbell that some sleuthers think was used in the crime.

There was something about a dumbbell in the garage and blood, and a dumbbell is seen in one of the photos from the 'estate' sale that was held the day of the murders (before the murders).

A bloody dumbbell from the family room that was found in the garage suggests the suspect used a weapon found at the scene - but was there a second weapon?

The suspect has a history of guns - did he also have a gun with him?

The day that the bodies were discovered, a reporter photographed bloody drag marks from the side door to the driveway ... as though the person was still alive and bleeding while being dragged out of the house. Gruesome.

Right! Its been so long, I'd actually forgotten about the estate sale! Otto, you did so much work trying to figure out the layout of the house from the pictures of advertised furniture for sale too! Gosh we waded through so many pictures ...

Based on what we know, I do think this might have been an act based on simmering rage over many years, ego, and perceived injustice by Garland. It will be interesting to see if the Mexico condo purchase does in fact figure in as you suspect.

I still have the floorpans.

I definitely believe that it was based on a perceived injustice in relation to the patent where his name was omitted, but I think there is a second injustice that put him over the edge ... and that is where Alvin's son borrowed money from his common-law wife to help purchase the Mexico condo. That common law wife is Garland's sister. When Alvin declared bankruptcy, and I know nothing about bankruptcy, did that get him out from under business and personal debt? If so, the loan from the Garland family for the Mexico condo would have been a write off. Garland could have lost it and felt helpless watching his sister as she was fleeced. Who knows what was going on in his mind? His convictions are for drugs, deceit, and retaliation, and perhaps he felt seething rage for Alvin and Kathryn in relation to money.

Did Alvin's son and Garland's daughter end up splitting up? I've forgotten... Talk about awkward family get togethers....

They split up - don't know when.

Normal families get together for Sunday dinner, this one gets together because the accused is related to the victim through his sister ... the common law wife of the victim's son ... and there are money problems.
