Nine escape in Central Washington jailbreak

YAKIMA, Wash. - Nine inmates escaped late Friday afternoon from the Yakima County Jail, including one awaiting trial for murder. Authorities say five were quickly recaptured, but four others including the one facing a murder charge are still at large.



Will Paulakis, a Yakima County Corrections Department division chief, says the inmates apparently fashioned a rope from bedsheets and escaped from maximum security out the east side of the jail about 5:20 p.m., after somehow making their way to the building's roof. Paulakis says one of the recaptured inmates was found on the roof of the main jail, and three on the roof of the adjacent one-story jail annex. They surrendered and made their way down a ladder, where police were waiting. The fifth was apprehended by a corrections officer next to the jail building before he could escape the grounds.

I think prisoners are allowed to watch TV in jail - the news - and with all these escapes lately, I'm wondering if it gives incentive for other inmates to try and follow suit!

Washington state inmates at large after breakout

YAKIMA, Wash. — Four maximum security inmates, including one murder defendant, were at large Saturday after they and five other men used a rope made of bed sheets to escape from the Yakima County Jail, authorities said.

The other five were quickly recaptured on the jail grounds.

A task force of sheriff's officers, city police, the U.S. Marshal Service and Yakima County corrections officers was searching for the missing four men, including a 20-year-old charged with second-degree murder.

"Right now we don't have any specific whereabouts of where these individuals may be headed or if they're even still together," Yakima Police Chief Sam Granato said Saturday on ABC's "Good Morning America."

"We have specific information that their plans were to arm themselves and gain access to weapons after they escaped, and we're positive they had assistance from someone on the outside," Granato said.

"At least one of those individuals has said that he is willing to engage police because he doesn't want to go back," the chief said.

The inmates escaped Friday afternoon, apparently going through a ceiling on the top floor of the four-story jail in downtown Yakima, and then gained access to the roof, Rink said. They used bed sheets to slide down to the roof of the adjacent one-story jail annex, then jumped to the ground.

One of those still at large Saturday was Santos Luera, awaiting trial Dec. 5 on a charge of killing a half brother during an argument, said Cpl. Ken Rink, a Corrections Department spokesman. The others were one man charged with theft and two charged with second-degree assault.
