Police found a woman's body in a public restroom where a carjacking suspect had been holed up for eight hours Friday, according to Police Commander Sergio Diaz.

John Romero, 46, of Los Angeles, was arrested in connection with the crimes shortly after noon.

"What had been, up to the this point, an investigation of a robbery and a grand theft auto -- a carjacking -- now has expanded to include the investigation of a homicide," Sergio Diaz, of the Hollenbeck Station.

John Anthony Romero Jr., 41, is charged with murder, attempted murder, carjacking, forcible rape and sodomy. Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner James Bianco ordered Romero held without bail.

The murder charge contains a special-circumstance allegation that the death of Lori Lynne Bucks occurred while she was being raped and sodomized. Prosecutors have not decided whether to seek the death penalty.

On Nov. 24 -- Thanksgiving Day -- Romero allegedly used a gun to steal a car from a guard providing security while a motion picture was being shot, Los Angeles police Detective Ron Ito said.

The car was found the next day in Lincoln Park, but when officers tried to contact Romero in a park restroom, he allegedly told them he was armed and warned them not to enter, police said.

An ensuing standoff lasted eight hours.

Romero gave up after a SWAT team shot tear gas and set off a "flash-bang," police said.

Officers later found the body of Bucks, a woman in her 40s with no known address, in the restroom, Ito said.
