Birna was last seen early Saturday morning in downtown Reykjavík. Capital area police have now released surveillance camera footage which shows her walking east on Laugavegur at about 5:25 Saturday morning. After scanning footage from several cameras along Laugavegur, it appears as though Birna walked no further than Laugavegur 31.

When she was last seen, she was wearing black jeans, a light-gray sweater, a black hooded fleece jacket, and black Dr. Marten shoes.

Her phone continued to produce a signal until at about 5:50 in Hafnarfjörður, near the area of the fire station. Given the distance covered in this short amount of time, it is possible she went to Hafnarfjörður by car, and police are looking for the driver of a red Kia Rio spotted traveling went on Laugavegur at about the same time and place that Birna disappeared.

RÚV reports that two black Dr. Martens boots – the same kind Birna was wearing on the night she disappeared – were found near the harbour. However, there is as yet no definitive proof that these are Birna’s boots, and police say they are working “full power” to get to the bottom of this. Their search will continue with first daylight.

The last time she was seen was at the Húrra music venue and nightclub on Friday night. She is seen on security cameras walking alone up Austurstræti, Bankastræti and Laugavegur to the building at no.31 where she disappeared from sight at 05:35.

police have asked media to publish photos from security cameras in the city centre. On the photographs you can see a red car, probably a Kia Rio, which was driven down Laugavegur and stopped at the building on Laugavegur no.31 at 05:25 on Saturday morning. Police ask the driver to come forward as soon as possible in order for police to gain further information about where Birna went.

It is possible that Birna had stopped to chat to tourists on her way up Laugavegur. She disappeared from sight at a building on Laugavegur no.31 at 05:20 AM. Her cellphone was then traced to Flatahraun in Hafnarfjörður, a town just outside of Reykjavik. She may have stopped to speak to tourists as she had gotten to know a lot of tourists lately.

Birna joined Tinder following a break up with her boyfriend.

Police have access to her Facebook account and nothing points to the fact that she had scheduled to meet with anyone that night through Facebook. Police are trying to obtain access to her other social media apps.

Police have now revealed that her phone had been switched off manually and did not run out of power.

The National Coastguard SAR helicopter searched for Birna today around Heiðmörk, a nature reserve just outside of Reykjavik which is partly in Hafnarfjörður. Dogs are also taking part in the search.

Birna's mother and Birna's friends have stated that she has never been involved with drugs and that the disappearance is completely out of character.

A crew member from a Greenland trawler is thought to have hired the red Kia Rio which was driven down Laugavegur the same time Birna was walking there. The car was spotted on the same dock her shoes were found. The trawler, that left the harbour on Saturday evening, has been turned around by the Coast Guard and it is thought that a helicopter carrying the special armed unit of the Icelandic Police Force has landed on it.

No other news as of now.

As someone who lives in Iceland I am absolutely devastated by this. I haven't had a good night's sleep since Sunday. I know people say this all the time about the places they live but these kinds of things almost never happen here. The last missing person case I remember was back in 2000, when I was a child and that young man was sadly found deceased, killed by his business partner. I don't believe there has ever been a woman missing after a late night out. The whole country feels like it's at a standstill, like no one is even daring to breathe.

I was going to start a thread on this but I didn't know in what sub-forum to put it so I just never did. Thank you JerseyGirl for doing this.

Is is considered normal for such a young person to be out alone on the streets at that hour?

The red car was spotted by security cameras at Hafnarfjörður harbor between 6 and 6:30 on Saturday morning. Those who stepped out of the car are believed to be connected to the trawler.

Shortly before that, or at 5:50, records show Birna’s cell phone being connected to a cell phone tower on the street Flatahraun in Hafnarfjörður and then manually turned off.

The trawler, Polar Nanoq is not expected to reach harbor in Iceland until late tomorrow night.

Yes it's not uncommon, although the clubs do close at about 04:30 I think so still being there at 05:25, especially alone, is a bit off unless you're waiting for someone. It can be dangerous of course, there have been reports of women being drugged at nightclubs and women being followed while they're walking home from a night out (women that live downtown, if you don't live downtown you have to take a taxi cause the city isn't really built for walking long distances) but somehow there are always people that rally around that girl that seems "out of it" and others that chase off the guys that are creepily following women.

It's a safe city but the downtown, or 101 as it's called, is a bit sleazy. Personally I would never walk there alone at night but I have been attacked before doing just that (except I lived in Barcelona then) so I admit that I'm extremely paranoid. When I moved to Reykjavík in 2015 I was offered an apartment in the next street to where she was last seen but I said a firm no and took an apartment in a suburb on the outskirts of the city, I couldn't be farther from the downtown and I like it like that. But I'm a country girl so those who have grown up in the city probably feel safer there than I do.

ETA: The video in the accompanying article is very grainy but apparently the man Birna bumped into can be seen crossing the street and going upwards in her direction.

I think people are just trying to make sense of this all at this point to be honest.

ITA. I was there for Iceland Airwaves music festival in Reykjavic in 2006. Amazing place, amazing people. Please find Birna.

No reports in English as of now but the police are making their way to Hvaleyrarvatn, which is a lake in Hafnarfjörður about 6 km from where Birna's shoes were found and the trawler was located. According to the article the police got a call that a body was found there, but it has yet to be substantiated.

I believe I am allowed to post the article even though it has not been corroborated? It is MSM even though it's in Icelandic. It's one of the highest regarded media source here in the country. The lead investigator is staying mum as of now, as he should IMO. I will delete this if asked.

As sick as it may be I hope this is some sort of a twisted joke. I need her to be found alive.

ETA: Nothing was found. It was a rumour that is said to have started on social media. It's a powerful weapon, both for good and evil IMO. It's almost 1:30 here, I foresee another sleepless night.

Hoping that Birna ( because of recent romantic breakup ) on impulse, went somewhere with someone, perhaps partied a little too heavily, is sleeping it off and afraid to call home.
Wishful thinking, but that does happen sometimes...

The Polar Nanoq was docked at Hafnarfjörður harbour and left the coast of Iceland just as Birna Brjánsdóttir went missing. Crew of the trawler are connected to the red rental car spotted on Laugavegur. mbl.is
The timeline of the events is therefore as follows: A car was spotted on security cameras in Laugavegur in Reykjavik city centre at 05:25 on Saturday morning, at the same time that Birna was spotted in a security camera. A red car was spotted on a security camera in Kópavogur and Garðabær and the car is seen speeding off when a light turns on in the security camera. At 05:50 Birna's phone is tracked to Flatahraun in Hafnarfjörður and then her phone was manually switched off. The car was spotted on security cameras at the Hafnarfjörður harbour between 06 and 6:30 on the morning of Saturday and the passengers in the red car are believed to be connected to the Polar Nanoq. Just before midnight last night, Birna's shoes were found near Atlantsolía oil tanks near the Hafnarfjörður harbour.

What do you suppose tsking off shoes in the freezing temps means?

There has been a lot of speculation about the shoes. They were found late Monday evening, there was snow on the soles like someone had been walking in the snow but there was no snow Saturday. Yet there was no snow on the actual shoes yet it had been snowing all Monday and not hot enough for it to melt off. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. I feel like I don't really have a big enough vocabulary to make myself understandable.

So the question is, were the shoes planted there sometimes that Monday evening? And if the crew members had something to do with this, who was left to plant the shoes since the trawler left on Saturday? And why plant them at the harbour the trawler was located at if members of the ship were a part of her disappearance?

Maybe there was wind and that's why there was no snow on the shoes. So if that's the case did she kick them off herself to leave a trail? Or was there a struggle there and her shoes were left there?

I'm an absolute amateur so I only have questions, no answers I'm sorry.
