Police are continuing to investigate after a Mesa teacher was found shot and killed in a Tempe backyard Sunday morning.

Officers were patrolling the neighborhood near Mill Avenue and Baseline Road around 4 a.m. Sunday when they heard shots fired. They responded to the scene and found the body of Ryne Zahner.

Several people inside the home at the time of the shooting reported seeing the suspect flee the area on foot, prompting police to launch an aerial and ground search.

Officers said on Monday night they are looking for 27-year-old Caleb Bartels.

Police describe Bartels as a white man, 5'10", 165 lbs with green eyes and brown hair.

His vehicle is described as a 2007 silver Pontiac Grand Prix with a license plate number BSK-8972.

According to Mesa police, Bartels has a criminal history including assault, burglary and disorderly conduct.

Police said if someone sees Bartels, they should not to approach him since he is considered armed and dangerous...

Tempe police say the family of a suspect wanted in connection with the shooting death of a 26-year-old Mesa schoolteacher has been cooperating with the investigation, and detectives believe he may have traveled out of state...

Police said they also believe that Bartels, 27, may have traveled to Sacramento, Calif., Reno, Nevada, and/or Beaverton, Oregon, in the days since the shooting.

"It's just surprising that somebody would take someone's life that was so meaningful to not just myself but everybody at Mesa High," said Abby Ramosmet. Students wore purple in honor of Zahner, who was part of a club dedicated to helping freshmen feel welcome on campus.

According to court paperwork, Zahner and Bartels know each other. Officials say the two were roommates at one point, and also got into a physical fight.

While a Tempe murder suspect remains on the run, the Tempe Police Department released a timeline of how close he could have been to being caught.

Officers are still looking for 27-year-old Caleb Bartels. Police released an updated photo of Bartels on Tuesday night. Police said he was stopped three times by law enforcement, including once in Nevada and once in Utah, before a nationwide alert to law enforcement was issued.

It is very disturbing that it takes this long to get a warrant out to all the states! This is how killers get away! I hope they find him soon without further incident!
"The Utah Highway Patrol stopped him again around 10 p.m., where a trooper found an AR-15, a pistol and fully-loaded magazine in the vehicle. There was no warrant issued for Bartels' arrest and the trooper had no indication he was prohibited from possessing a firearm. He was let go."
