Vermont's Capital Investigates 1st Murder to Occur in Nearly 100 Years

---
Vermont police are searching for a suspect in a murder that authorities said is the first to occur in the state’s capital in almost a century.

Vermont State Police issued an arrest warrant on Monday for 29-year-old Jayveon Caballer, who is wanted for second-degree murder.

Investigators believe Caballero knew the victim, 33-year-old Markus Austin, and that an altercation occurred between them early Sunday morning outside a bar in the town of Barre. Detectives received information that at some point during the altercation, Austin assaulted Caballero’s girlfriend, 22-year-old Desiree Cary, according to police.

Prosecutor says murder suspect was ‘lying in wait’
A Vermont prosecutor told a judge Monday that Jayveon Caballero, accused of second-degree murder in the January fatal shooting of Markus Austin in Montpelier, waited outside Austin’s apartment in the early-morning hours of the day the shooting took place.

Caballero, 29, pleaded not guilty in Barre criminal court Monday. It was his first Vermont court appearance since being returned to the state from Florida over the weekend.

Reginald Jones, 35, of Barre, has been charged with helping Caballero flee. He pleaded not guilty in January to a felony count of accessory after the fact.

Caballero, Cary and Jones’ girlfriend reportedly drove a maroon Nissan to the Greyhound bus station in White River Junction. Jones told police he bought Caballero a bus ticket with Caballero’s money to go to either Boston or Philadelphia.

Caballero Back in Vermont Facing Second Degree Murder Charge
Caballero was extradited back to Vermont over the weekend of May 20 to face charges of murder stemming from the Jan. 22 homicide of Markus Austin, 33, in Montpelier, according to a joint report issued by the Vermont State Police, the U.S. Marshal’s Service and the Montpelier Police Department.

Caballero was arraigned on a charge of second-degree murder, which carries a maximum jail sentence of 20 years to life without parole. He will appear again in court May 26 where it will be decided “whether the state’s evidence is strong enough for a continued hold without bail,” Williams said. If it is granted, bail will be set at $500,000.

In November, a jury convicted Jayveon Caballero of second-degree murder in the killing of Markus Austin in Montpelier in January 2017. The trial lasted seven days. Caballero, 31, of Barre, is scheduled to be sentenced in Washington County criminal court in Barre March 20, where he faces a potential sentence of life in prison and a minimum sentence of 20 years.
